The Mumbai Indians (MI) are suffering through a poor season in the IPL 2026. The five-time champions are having one of their worst seasons, having lost five of their last seven matches. As MI are plagued by poor form, there is concern about Rohit Sharma's form, who has been missing from a couple of games.

The former MI captain has been missing out on three successive matches after sustaining a right hamstring injury during the MI vs RCB match on April 12.

In Rohit Sharma's absence, Mumbai have tested two other opening options, Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock, before dropping Rickelton in favour of Danish Malewar. Although nothing has worked at the top apart from de Kock's century vs PBKS.

Rohit Sharma to return for MI vs SRH

However, after missing three straight games, Rohit Sharma is set to return. As reported by Cricbuzz, he will likely play in Mumbai's next home game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

"Rohit is working hard in the middle to get back to full fitness," a source told Cricbuzz.

It is learnt that the 38-year-old batter is recovering swiftly, but the MI team management is not eager to push him too much, considering the longitivity of the IPL 2026. The same was hinted by team's head coach Mahela Jayawardene after Mumbai's hard defeat to Punjab.

“Rohit started running yesterday. He knows his body better than anybody else, so it's nothing serious, but at the same time, we don't want to push, and it's still early season," Jayawardene had said.

CSK thrashes MI in Rohit Sharma's absence

In Rohit Sharma's absence, the five-time champions have lost two matches, against PBKS and CSK, and won just a solitary fixture vs GT.

When it seemed that the Hardik Pandya-led MI would bounce back, after thrashing the Gujarat Titans in a massive victory of 99 runs, but they again lost the plot. In the very next game, they received a beating at the hands of the Chennai Super Kings.

In the IPL El Clásico, Sanju Samson laid the foundation for CSK's win by hitting another century this season. His unbeaten 101 took them to a total of 207/6. Later in the chase, MI faced two major batting collapses, as they were folded for 104 runs.

Mumbai lost three wickets in the blink of an eye, but Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma revived the innings with a 73-run partnership. However, the power-packed batting surrendered against Akeal Hosein, who returned with 4/17.

The CSK left-arm spinner teamed up with Noor Ahmad (2/24) and the rest of the bowlers, as they reduced MI from 84/3 to 104 all out.

Can Rohit Sharma's return script MI's comeback?

Rohit Sharma's return will be a major boost for the five-time champions, especially after he started the tournament with a sublime 78 off 38 balls vs KKR. So far, he has looked the most promising batter from Mumbai's camp, scoring 137 runs in four outings.

Rohit's inclusion is expected to restore the MI's much-needed batting confidence. Following a heavy defeat, MI will face SRH at the Wankhede Stadium on April 29, after a six-day break.
