Riyan Parag to lead RR in IPL 2026 [Source: AFP]
In a significant development, the Rajasthan Royals are set to appoint Riyan Parag as their new captain for the IPL 2026. The Royals were searching for a new captain after trading Sanju Samson to CSK and roping in the all-rounder duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran in return. Although Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel were also two high-profile names to replace Samson, the Rajasthan Royals have finalised Riyan Parag as their skipper heading to the IPL 2026.
It's worth mentioning that it was Parag who led the Royals when Samson missed some matches due to injury in the IPL 2025.
Riyan Parag to be named as Rajasthan Royals captain for IPL 2026
According to ESPNCricinfo, Riyan Parag was interviewed by RR's new head coach Kumar Sangakkara, who considered him the perfect man to lead the Rajasthan-based IPL franchise.
Although some reports claimed that either Yashasvi Jaiswal or Dhruv Jurel could be handed over the captaincy duties, the Royals have preferred Parag ahead of the decorated Indian duo for the role.
Overall, Parag has played 84 matches for the Royals, amassing 1566 runs at an average of 26.10 and a strike rate of 141.85. He is one of their key players and is expected to spearhead Rajasthan Royals' IPL 2026 campaign with his all-round attributes and leadership acumen.
Riyan Parag's record as Rajasthan Royals captain in IPL
Swashbuckling middle-order batter Riyan Parag has led Rajasthan Royals in eight IPL matches with modest success. His captaincy record in RR colours is far from ideal, as the Royals have lost six out of those eight games.
So, given that Sanju Samson was one of RR's most successful captains, leading them to 33 wins in the IPL, including an entry into the final in the 2022 edition, it would be a daunting task for Parag to fill his giant void.
Having said that, the young cricketer has showcased excellent leadership attributes for Assam in the domestic circuit and it will be interesting to see how he utilises the resources, especially the ones Rajasthan Royals picked during the IPL 2026 mini auction.
Rajasthan Royals' coaching setup overhaul for IPL 2026
Rajasthan Royals became the first-ever IPL champions when they defeated MS Dhoni's CSK in a riveting final. Under Shane Warne's leadership, the Royals enjoyed stellar success before their fate turned upside down.
Apart from serving a two-year ban due to the involvement of their players in spot-fixing, Rajasthan Royals have blown hot and cold in the IPL, with the coveted trophy remaining elusive for them.
The 2025 season was a forgettable one for RR, as they finished second-last on the ten-team points table with only four wins across fourteen matches. So, they had to make wholesale changes to their existing setup, parting ways with Rahul Dravid and Sanju Samson.
Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara replaced Dravid as the head coach, and a dynamic leader like Riyan Parag coming to helm, RR will eye redemption through a much-awaited IPL triumph this year.
