The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is less than a week away. The tournament, set to be played across India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, and Washington Sundar's availability remains uncertain.

Washington Sundar suffered a side strain in his lower left rib while bowling during the first ODI against New Zealand on January 11 in Vadodara.

Although initially believed to be minor, medical scans revealed a more serious issue. However, Sundar was subsequently ruled out of the remaining ODIs and the ongoing T20I series.

Washington Sundar doubtful for T20 WC

In the recent report from The Indian Express, the BCCI Medical team has advised Sundar to rest for at least 2 more weeks, which has made his participation in the  T20 World Cup uncertain.

With the ICC squad change deadline on January 31, the Indian management faces a critical decision, whether to retain Sundar or bring in a replacement.

Bishnoi as backup for Sundar at T20 World Cup 2026

It is worth noting that Ravi Bishnoi has emerged as a potential replacement following a brilliant comeback in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand.

The leg-spinner made an immediate impact in Guwahati, playing for India after almost a year. He bagged 2 wickets for 18 runs in 4 overs, dismissing New Zealand's top scorers Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman.

Originally, Bishnoi was not included in India’s T20I squad and was even left out of the T20 World Cup 2026 squad. However, Washington Sundar's untimely injury opened the door for the leg-spinner.

Known for his unusual spin and ability to bowl more googlies than traditional leg breaks, Bishnoi troubled the New Zealand batters consistently.

His quick deliveries caught the opposition off guard. With consistent performances like this, Bishnoi has now placed himself firmly in contention for the World Cup, especially if Sundar fails to recover in time.

Selectors face crucial decision ahead of T20 World Cup

It would be wrong to say that Bishnoi’s performance in Guwahati would have certainly caught the attention of the Indian selection committee. With Sundar’s World Cup spot hanging in doubt, Bishnoi could step into the side.

If Sundar fails to recover, Bishnoi's ability to bowl economically, take wickets at crucial moments, and adapt to pressure situations could make him an ideal replacement.

Additionally, the expected return of Axar Patel adds further options for the team alongside Bishnoi’s current form in the spin department.

Next, it would be interesting to see whether Bishnoi will be part of the playing XI for the next two T20Is against New Zealand.

A strong performance in these matches could cement his place in the playing XI for the T20 World Cup 2026, ensuring India has a reliable spin option even in Sundar’s absence.

With just a few weeks remaining for the tournament, the Indian cricket team management will closely monitor Sundar’s recovery and, accordingly, make a decision for the marquee tournament.
