Chennai Super Kings arrived in Guwahati on March 28 ahead of their opening match of the IPL 2026 season against Rajasthan Royals on March 30. However, one player missing from the squad was veteran star MS Dhoni.

The match will be played at the Rajasthan Royals’ second home ground in Guwahati and marks the first game of the season for both teams. Meanwhile, the tournament began on March 28 with RCB defeating SRH by six wickets in the opening match.

CSK arrive in Guwahati without MS Dhoni

The Chennai Super Kings squad received a warm welcome upon arrival in Guwahati. Fans gathered in large numbers outside the team hotel, cheering loudly and showing their excitement for the new season. Players were seen interacting with supporters, signing autographs, and posing for pictures.

The atmosphere was lively and positive, reflecting the strong fan base CSK enjoys across the country. However, one major absence stood out was that of MS Dhoni.

The franchise on March 28 confirmed that MS Dhoni is recovering from a calf strain and will miss the first two weeks of the tournament. According to official statements, he is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is expected to be unavailable for at least four matches.

These matches include the opener against Rajasthan Royals on March 30, followed by games against Punjab Kings on April 3, Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 5, and Delhi Capitals on April 11.

Dhoni's numbers in IPL 2025

This is a significant setback for CSK, as Dhoni has been a key figure in guiding the team during crucial moments. Even at 44, he remains one of the most influential players in the league. Last season, he played 14 matches and scored 196 runs at a strike rate of 135.17.

The franchise wrote, "MS Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a calf strain. As a result, he is likely to miss the first two weeks of TATA IPL 2026. Get well soon, Thala! 💛🦁"

Who will keep wickets in absence of MS Dhoni?

With Dhoni unavailable, Sanju Samson is expected to take over wicketkeeping duties for the Chennai Super Kings. Sanju Samson, who was traded from the Rajasthan Royals, brings valuable experience and is also likely to play as an opening batter.

Another option for the team is Urvil Patel, though current indications suggest Sanju Samson will be the first choice. His recent performances as a wicketkeeper in international cricket make him a reliable replacement.

The team will continue to be led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has taken over captaincy responsibilities. However, Dhoni’s tactical input and calm presence will certainly be missed in the early matches.

There is also growing speculation that IPL 2026 could be Dhoni's final season. With ongoing fitness concerns and age-related challenges, CSK appears to be gradually preparing for the future by investing in younger players and new combinations for IPL.

As the CSK prepare to face the Rajasthan Royals at the Barsapara Stadium, all eyes will be on how the team performs without their legendary figure.

Dhoni is expected to return later in the season, but his absence in the opening phase could play a crucial role in shaping CSK’s campaign.
