As per the latest developments, the International Cricket Council have declared the match officials for the T20 World Cup 2026. The panel of umpires boasts legendary names who are veterans in the field, having served for years since their early days as umpires.

Headlining the lineup, Andrew Pycroft will be one of the match referees of the tournament, with Kumar Dharmasena and Wayne Knights set to be the on-field umpires for the opening match of the tournament between Pakistan and Netherlands.

While the complete matchday appointments for the group stage of the 20-team tournament have been announced, the Super 8 and knockout stage officials will be confirmed later.

For Group C clashes, Nitin Menon and Sam Nogajski will be part of the on-field umpiring panel. Notably, Nitin Menon was part of the on-field team for the first semi-final of the 2024 World Cup between Afghanistan and South Africa.

For India’s clash with the United States of America on February 7, Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker will be the on-field duo. Notably, marking a major achievement for Rod Tucker, this competition will bring up his 50th match during the tournament, as Tucker will also officiate England vs Nepal, India vs Namibia, and South Africa vs United Arab Emirates clashes.

Chris Gaffaney and Richard Illingworth will officiate the Group B clash between Australia and Ireland on February 11. Richard Illingworth, alongside Dharmasena, will also umpire the high-profile clash between rivals India and Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.

What is the controversy between PCB and Andrew Pycroft?

With Pycroft being one of the match referees, bitter memories for Pakistan have resurfaced due to the no-handshake controversy during the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 match.

Notably, the infamous no-handshake incident between Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Ali Agha in the Asia Cup was allegedly blamed by the Pakistan Cricket Board on Andy Pycroft, who was the match referee at the time.

PCB claimed Pycroft had instructed Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha not to shake hands with the Indian captain. This came after India indicated that the decision was political, made in alignment with the Indian government and the Board of Control for Cricket in India following the Pahalgam terror attack.

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi did not take this lightly and lodged an official complaint with the ICC, demanding Pycroft’s immediate removal. Though the ICC rejected PCB’s demands, Pakistan also threatened to boycott matches if Pycroft was not removed.

However, setting aside previous concerns, the ICC have once again reinstated their faith in Andy Pycroft as one of the match referees, even with Pakistan participating as one of the competing nations in the T20 World Cup 2026.
