The MI vs CSK IPL 2026 clash saw Sanju Samson delivering the ball to all corners of the field. However, in the 17th over of Mumbai Indians' bowling, a brutal blow might have come in the form of Mitchell Santner.

The New Zealand all-rounder and skipper was seen walking off the field at Wankhede after getting hurt while taking a catch of Kartik Sharma in the deep backward square.

Santner A Crucial Cog For MI’s IPL 2026 Campaign

Mitchell Santner has been one of the most crucial weapons for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. The cricketer, with his all-rounder abilities, has impacted the game with both the bat as well as the ball.

Santner scored 26 runs from his two appearances, both coming at crucial stages for MI. With the ball too, he has taken five wickets from four innings at an economy rate of 8.93 and a strike rate of 16.00, including a two-wicket haul against Gujarat Titans on April 20. However, this massive blow will have MI’s bones rattling.

What Happened to Mitchell Santner In MI vs CSK Clash?

In the MI vs CSK clash, Mitchell Santner was seen athletically diving forward to take the catch of Kartik Sharma off Jasprit Bumrah's bowling.

On the penultimate ball of the 17th over, Bumrah delivered a slower ball, a waist-high full toss on middle and leg, which Kartik tried to clear on his front leg and played a pick-up shot across the line.

However, the bat missed the pace from Bumrah, and Mitchell Santner dived forward to hold on to a very good catch. As he dived forward, he landed on his arms and then on the rest of his body.

Although he did not immediately show any concern, soon after getting up, Santner was seen in visible pain as Naman Dhir came up to celebrate with him.

Santner was grabbing his left shoulder, with pain on his face, as Naman Dhir signalled for the physios to come in. The physios rushed in, and Santner walked off the field after landing badly on his bowling arm.

Soon after sustaining the injury, Santner was taken off the field and later seen applying ice packs to his left shoulder in the dugout. While it remains unclear how quickly he will recover, there have been no serious concerns reported by the Mumbai Indians management so far.

Is Santner's Injury Serious?

Whether Mitchell Santner will return soon remains uncertain. As the Chennai Super Kings' innings nears its end, the Mumbai Indians star is yet to come out of the dugout, where he has been seen applying ice packs and taking medication as advised by the physios. Hence, Santner’s return to bowl in the MI vs CSK clash now appears unlikely.

Will Santner Come Out To Play?

However, if required to bat during the chase, the New Zealand star might have to come out, as the IPL does not have a rule allowing a replacement for an on-field injury during the match unless its a concussion substitute.

Mitchell Santner Injury Is Danger Signal For MI

Moreover, if Santner’s injury is serious, it could hurt Mumbai Indians’ campaign. Batting in the lower middle order, Santner is a solid prospect who can deliver with brisk pinch-hitting.

In crunch situations, he is also a reliable spin option, covering any lack of spin depth in the playing XI. However, with Santner sidelined, this could turn into a major headache for the MI management.
