On Sunday, September 6, East Zone and South Zone will lock horns for the final of the Duleep Trophy 2026. Chepauk Stadium in Chennai will host the prestigious match, which was earlier scheduled to be played at the CoE in Bengaluru.

The CoE lacked a permit to allow fans, which prompted the BCCI to shift the venue to the MA Chidambaram Stadium. South Zone are eyeing their 14th title, while East Zone has a chance to end their 13-year-long drought and lift their 3rd title.

Talking about the journeys of the two teams, East Zone has been bolstered by the presence of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The southpaw is having a tryst with playing finals and has reached another final in his career.

The Ishan Kishan-led side crushed North East Zone in the quarter-final by winning by an innings and 210 runs. East Zone entered the final by upsetting Rajat Patidar-led Central Zone and beat them by four wickets. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s brilliant 92-run knock in the 1st innings proved to be the difference.

South Zone received a direct entry to the semi-final and faced North Zone. Tilak Varma led by example, and his century helped his side beat them by 7 wickets.

It will be an interesting battle because South Zone have added the likes of KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, and Mohammed Siraj for the final to counter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's threat. Ahead of the all-important fixture, this article will shed light on MA Chidambaram Stadium’s pitch report and weather update.

Chepauk is known to offer assistance to spinners. Chennai used to offer low bounce, more turn. However, the pitch has changed over the years. Despite that, the spinners will come into play. If we look at the data, then 57.82% of wickets have been picked up by the spinners.

As the match progresses and cracks open up on the surface, the more spinners will be threatening. The data also backs that because team batting first has won 13 matches, while the team that bats last has only won 10 games. Therefore, it gets difficult for a team to bat on Day 4 or Day 5 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

The team that wins the toss should look to bat first in the Duleep Trophy 2026 final.

The temperature will range around 35°C, but there is 55% probability of rain. Around 2 hours of rain is predicted on Sunday and 1 hour on Monday.

Conclusion

As mentioned above, Chennai offers help to spinners. However, weather will play a huge part now. Usually, Chennai is warm, sunny and humid. But for the upcoming match, rain will play a big part and the seamers will be helpful as well.

Therefore, it will be a difficult decision to make for East Zone and South Zone captain whether to bat or bowl after winning the toss.
