In a major development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to make the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) bigger and better. IPL 2026 is set to have 84 matches in total, 10 more than the usual 74 matches which happened last year as well.
The information came after the introduction of the IPL 2026 Fantasy game. There, under the column ‘How To Play’, it was clearly mentioned that the players who will be involved in the fantasy game during IPL 2026 can make changes until Match 80, the last match before entering the playoffs.
IPL 2025 Vs IPL 2026 - What Are The Changes?
Earlier, it was Match 70 that marked the end of the IPL league stage, with four matches in the Playoffs. Now, there will be 84 matches in total, with the usual four matches in the Playoffs.
The BCCI is supposed to make the formal announcement soon, with a new format, in all likelihood, to be introduced.
"Users joining the IPL Fantasy League Game before Match 1 can make 160 transfers until Match 80 (Total no. of matches - official announcement for now), which is the end of the league stage," a statement on the IPLT20 fantasy game read in its 'How to Play' section.

Earlier, ever since IPL 2022, each team used to play five teams twice and four teams once during the league stage. This used to make 14 matches in total, and from then on, the top four qualified for the playoffs. This had been the story till IPL 2025.

However, with 84 matches set to be happening in IPL 2026, things are set to be tweaked for sure, and the BCCI will clarify once everything is set.
IPL 2026 is likely to feature 16 league-stage matches. If that happens, teams will play each of the seven franchises twice, and there will be two single-headers. However, it all will only be for sure once the BCCI makes the announcement with a media release.

When Will IPL 2026 Begin?
IPL 2026 will get underway on March 28, with last season’s champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) facing high-flying Sunrisers Hyderabad at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The BCCI only shared the IPL schedule of 20 matches, and the Assembly Election Dates were due back then when the formal announcement happened.
