New Zealand edged out Team India in the third ODI to record a rare ODI series win on Indian soil. Daryl Mitchell anchored New Zealand’s win with a classy century alongside bowlers Zak Foulkes and Kristian Clarke before Virat Kohli demonstrated his batting might with his run-chase fury.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights from the third ODI of the three-match series between India and New Zealand, as it panned out at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday, January 18.
Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips ton up to take New Zealand to 337
New Zealand batted first and mounted 337-8 in 50 overs despite losing both openers within the first two overs of the match. While Henry Nicholls was knocked over by Indian paceman and comeback man Arshdeep Singh for a first-ball duck, his opening partner Devon Conway was bested by Harshit Rana in the second over.
Will Young at number three also failed to make the most of his confident start, as the cricketer was dismissed by Rana for just 30 from 41 balls as the visitors slipped to 58-3 in 12.1 overs.
Middle-order batters and batting all-rounders Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips subsequently led New Zealand’s counterattack with a record 219-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Both cricketers plundered majestic hundreds, with Mitchell top-scoring in the innings through his monumental knock of 137 from 131 balls.
The 34-year-old blasted 15 boundaries and three huge sixes in his innings to record his second successive century. Phillips also cracked a swift 106 in 88 balls with nine fours and three sixes before both centurions were dismissed by Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.
New Zealand captain Michael Bracewell fired 28* off 18 balls to provide the slog-overs impetus to the visitors. For India, both Arshdeep Singh (3-63) and Harshit Rana (3-84) picked up three wickets each in the innings, while Mohammed Siraj and ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with a wicket each.
Virat Kohli fights on, but Foulkes, Clarke win it for New Zealand
India lost opening batter Rohit Sharma for just 11 off 13 balls early in the chase to New Zealand paceman Zak Foulkes. Captain Shubman Gill hit his stride with four confident boundaries but failed to carry beyond his 23-run knock. Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul both fell for single digits as India’s troubles worsened at 71-4 in a chase of 338.
Virat Kohli at number three raged on amidst tumbling wickets, and formed an 88-run partnership with all-rounder and half-centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy (53 off 57). While Ravindra Jadeja fell cheaply for just 12 in front of Jayden Lennox, another 99-run partnership with Harshit Rana (52 off 43) instilled fresh life into the game as Team India jumped back into contention in pulling off an unlikely victory.
Virat Kohli notched up a fighting century, charting 124 from just 108 balls with 10 fours and three sixes, but his dismissal tilted the tide back in New Zealand’s favor as the visitors clinched a thrilling 41-run win to secure the three-match series 2-1.
Zak Foulkes (3-77) and Kristian Clarke (3-54) both picked up three wickets each in the innings, and Jayden Lennox bagged the huge wickets of KL Rahul and Jadeja.
