Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed is facing uncertainty over his participation in The Hundred 2026. The mystery spinner, who was picked by Sunrisers Leeds for a lucrative £190,000 deal, may not be fully available for the tournament.

It is important to mention that Abrar Ahmed’s signing had already made headlines as he became the first Pakistan cricketer to join a Hundred franchise owned by an Indian company. The Leeds-based team, backed by the Sunrisers ownership group, showed strong intent by investing heavily in the young spinner.

However, his participation now hinges on something that is beyond the franchise's control.

It is important to note that Abrar is likely set to miss The Hundred 2026 for Sunrisers Leeds due to international commitments. The Hundred and Pakistan's upcoming Test series against the West Indies are scheduled at the same time.

The series is scheduled to take place from July 15 to August 7, overlapping significantly with The Hundred, which runs from July 21 to August 16. There is a strong chance that he will be part of the Test squad.

If selected, the PCB is unlikely to grant him an NOC, which is mandatory for players to participate in overseas franchise leagues. Without this clearance, Abrar would be unable to join and participate in Hundred.

In recent reports from T20 Tracker, Abrar may only be available towards the latter stages of the competition. This includes the final two group matches and the knockout rounds, provided he receives the necessary permissions and completes his international duties.

This situation places Sunrisers Leeds in a tricky position. While the franchise secured a high-quality spinner, they now face uncertainty over his availability during the crucial early and middle phases of the tournament.

As per league rules, teams are allowed to sign partial or full replacements for players who are unavailable, and the franchise may be forced to consider this option.

Why Abrar Ahmed could be a crucial player for Sunrisers Leeds?

Earlier, the team’s management, led by head coach Daniel Vettori, had identified Abrar Ahmed as a crucial overseas spin option after missing out on other targets during the auction. His unique bowling style and ability to trouble batters in the shorter format made him a valuable addition.

"He's unique in the amount of variations and a lot of, particularly domestic players, won't have seen him before," Vettori said.

"We came into the auction with every player available to us. As soon as this option was available there were a number of very good spinners from international teams that were an option, but Abrar was a priority," he added.

Why was Abrar Ahmed in the spotlight in The Hundred 2026 auction?

During the The Hundred 2026 auction, Abrar’s case has also drawn attention due to the broader political context. With ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, his signing by an Indian-owned franchise had already sparked debate among fans.

After his signing, Abrar Ahmed mentioned that he is not affected by the outside noise - "The reaction to Abrar’s signing was not unexpected but he is not losing sleep over the uproar. They see this as a matter between the England and Wales Cricket Board and the franchise, not the player," Abrar's managing team exclusively told the Telecom Asia Sport.

As things stand now, the final decision will depend on Pakistan's team selection and the PCB’s stance on granting the NOC. Until then, both the player and Sunrisers Leeds will have to wait for clarity on what lies ahead in the 2026 season of The Hundred.
