India's star opener Abhishek Sharma gave the exact reason for India’s shocking defeat against Ireland in the first T20I of the ongoing India tour of Ireland 2026. The match was played at the Civil Service Cricket Club, Belfast, on Saturday, June 26.
Notably, Ireland stunned the defending T20 World Cup champions by registering their first-ever win over India in any format.
Moreover, the victory handed the hosts a 1-0 lead in the two-match T20I series. It was also India's first match since lifting the T20 World Cup 2026 trophy after defeating New Zealand.
Ireland Bounce Back After Early Blow
After winning the toss, India opt to bowl first and got off to an impressive start. They reduced Ireland to 30/3 inside the powerplay. However, Ireland made a remarkable comeback through their captain, Lorcan Tucker, who played a composed half-century.
At the other end, Gareth Delany played an aggressive knock of 49 runs from just 32 balls. As a result, Ireland finished with a competitive total of 182/9.
For India, Harshit Rana was the standout bowler with excellent figures of 3/24. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel chipped in with two wickets each to keep the scoring under control for most of the innings.

Abhishek Sharma Shines But India's Batting Fails
India's chase began on a positive note as Abhishek Sharma looked in outstanding touch. The left-handed opener smashed a blistering half-century in just 20 balls and gave India hope of chasing the target comfortably.
However, the rest of the batting unit failed to support him. Sanju Samson was dismissed for just 5, Ishan Kishan managed 1, while captain Shreyas Iyer departed for 3.
Things became even worse after Abhishek Sharma lost his wicket. The innings quickly lost momentum as India slipped to 100/6. Although Shivam Dube scored 25 and Axar Patel contributed 15 runs, neither batter could change the course of the match.
Ireland's bowlers stayed disciplined throughout the innings. Matt Hollard starred with figures of 3/28, while debutant Jai Moondra also impressed with the ball.
Eventually, India were bowled out for 148, as Ireland completed one of the biggest upsets in T20I history.
Abhishek Sharma Explains The Reason Behind India's Defeat
Following the disappointing loss, Abhishek Sharma explained that adapting quickly to playing conditions is extremely important, especially when teams have back-to-back matches with very little preparation time.
Notably, apart from Abhishek, none of the other Indian batters adapted well to the conditions, with only Shivam Dube managing to score more than 20 runs.
"Its just how quickly we adapt the conditions, that's really matters as a team, because when you are playing back to back games, as a group you have to step forward and get used to the conditions, whenever you get practice sessions or probably get used to.
I feel as a dominating team, you have to adapt really quick and that's what we were trying today, but unfortunately it didn't happen," Abhishek Sharma told the reporters after the match.
India Eye Series-Leveling Win
Despite the disappointing result, India will have an immediate opportunity to bounce back. The two teams will meet once again in the second and final T20I on June 28.
While India will aim to level the series, Ireland will be hoping to continue their winning momentum and seal a memorable series victory.
