For now, this is Saptak Sanyal, signing off on behalf of my co-commentators Rajarshi Das, Deepak Prakash and Arijit Kundu and the scorer/analyst of this game Raju Khariya. Good night!
In two days time, both the teams will be back here for the second T20I of this three-match series. Zimbabwe Women will look to regroup and bounce back, while West Indies Women will try to carry this momentum to take an unassailable lead of 2-0 by winning that game. The first ball will be bowled on 5th October at 4:30 PM IST and 1 PM Local Time. Do join us for that game.
A complete team effort from West Indies Women have sealed a thumping victory for them. They showed some gritty performance with the ball to restrict Zimbabwe to 97 and then a dominating batting show helped them to win the game by 8 wickets and with 43 balls to spare.
7:10 PM IST and 3:40 PM Local Time: West Indies Women have completed a dominating victory over Zimbabwe Women to go 1-0 up in the three-match series. They restricted Zimbabwe to 97 in their 20 overs and chased it down in 12.5 overs. A victory by 8 wickets and with 43 balls to spare for the visitors and now they can surely hope for a whitewash.
West Indies skipper Chinelle Henry had won the toss and opted to field first. Zimbabwe lost their opener Sharne Mayers for a duck, but Modester Mupachikwa scored 20 runs. One thing that went against the hosts was playing way too many dot balls. Mupachikwa took 33 balls to get there, Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano took 10 balls to score 4 runs, Kelis Ndlovu scored only 11 off 12. At the halfway stage, they were struggling with 40/3 on the board.
Beloved Biza showed some resistance with 21 off 24 balls before Karishma Ramharack got the better of her. Skipper Josephine Nkomo (8), Nyasha Gwanzura (10) could not score big. Eventually they could score only 97 runs losing 9 wickets in their 20 overs.
For West Indies Women, Ramharack was the pick of the bowlers with 3/17 from 4 overs. Afy Fletcher took a couple of wickets for 18 runs. Jahzara Claxton also ended with 2/16. Chinelle Henry ended with 1/12.
Eboni Brathwaite and Jahzara Claxton opened the innings for the visitors. In pursuit of a modest target of 98 runs, they were off to a flyer. 13 runs came off the first over and Eboni continued her blitzkrieg despite Claxton struggling at the other end. Eboni erred in judgement and played a back foot shot to a length ball to see the ball clipping the top of her middle stump for 24 off 13 balls. Claxton's struggle continued, but Realeanna Grimmond scored runs rapidly from the other end.
At the halfway stage, West Indies were 72/1 and Claxton was batting with 16 off 28 balls. Grimmond hit 5 fours and a maximum in her innings to score 34 off 25 balls. Claxton did it better after that and remained unbeaten on 31 off 37 balls. Grimmond went for the glory shot, but found Beloved Biza off the latter's own bowling. Stafanie Taylor came out to bat with the scores levelled and she took the winning single to take her team home.
Olinda Chare and Beloved Biza picked up a wicket each for Zimbabwe Women. Chare was miserly in her 4 overs, conceding only 22 runs. Biza went for 10 bowling 1.5 overs. Kudzai Chigora (27 in 2 overs), Michelle Mavunga (12 in 1 over) were expensive in their spells.
