For now, it's me, Deepak Prakash, signing off on behalf of my colleagues, Karthik Raj, Nikhil Kalla, and Bishal Mandal. CHEERS!
That's all from this one-sided contest, folks! Toronto Kings bounced back from their opening-game defeat to register their first win of the season. Vancouver Guardians, meanwhile, failed to get the start they would have hoped for and will look to bounce back stronger in their next match. They will take on Mississauga Skyhawks in their second game of the tournament, scheduled for 7:30 PM IST tonight.
Dwaine Pretorius (Toronto Kings Captain):"[What made you really happy about the performance?] Well, there are a lot of things. I thought Jon-Jon bowled really well but set up by AK, Kaleem and Mo. Sometimes you lose your way but Mark Deyal held the innings together. I thought this was a very valuable innings.
[About Evin Lewis and Rahkeem Cornwall's fireworks] That was special. (Evin Lewis) Lewy when in full flow is awesome to watch. Really happy for both of them. Rahkeem had a tough start yesterday. Didn't get off to the fast start that he usually gets to. What was great to watch was that Rahkeem understood that Evin Lewis was batting well in the Powerplay and then he took down spin. We did lose some wickets later on in clumps though.
[Seamers not bowling out and not using himself as well] As a captain, much easier. As a bowler, I want to be bowling but because of the schedule, just tried to save them. Trying to keep the spirit in the bowlers really positive. You just go to them and say that just because you are not bowling four overs, doesn't mean you are not bowling. The spinners were really impressive. Really a performance that we can be proud of and a standard that we can follow."
Rony Talukdar (Vancouver Guardians Captain): "We're disappointed with the loss, and congratulations to the winning team. We'll learn from our mistakes and come back stronger in the next game.
[Where did it go wrong?] They batted and bowled really well, but we fell short in both departments."
Evin Lewis (Player of the Match):"[How much does this mean to you?] It means a lot, it is great to get a victory. Went in to get a good start, wanted to put the bowlers under pressure and we had a pretty good Powerplay.
[Batting with Rahkeem Cornwall] It is simple to bat with him. When I am going he supports. When he is going I support. I am working hard to get my old stance, tonight was exceptional for me.
[What is the technical change you are looking to do?] I am trying to be more open-chested. Hopefully, I get it back soon."
Evin Lewis bags the 'Player of the Match'.
Time for the Post-match Presentation!
7:45 AM IST, 10:15 PM Local Time: A solid comeback from Toronto Kings after their defeat in the tournament opener, as they thumped Vancouver Guardians by 85 runs to register their first win of the season.
After being invited to bat first, Toronto Kings posted a competitive 197/7, thanks to explosive half-centuries from Rahkeem Cornwall (57 off 29 balls) and Evin Lewis (54 off 22 balls). The opening pair added 79 runs in just six overs, providing a flying start. Mark Deyal continued the momentum with a valuable 46 off 39 balls. However, they lost wickets at regular intervals in the last five overs and missed an opportunity to cross the 200-run mark. Arun Nag Sai bagged 2 wickets for Vancouver Guardians but was a tad expensive, conceding 41 runs in his 4 overs.
In reply, Vancouver Guardians got off to a sluggish start, with openers George Munsey (32 off 35 balls) and Rony Talukdar (17 off 21 balls) struggling to score freely during the powerplay. The duo added 38 runs for the opening wicket but took 7.2 overs to do so, leaving the Guardians with too much ground to make up and making a comeback increasingly difficult. Vancouver Guardians fell like nine pins and were folded for just 112 runs in 18.2 overs, with JJ Smuts (4/30) and Saad Bin Zafar (3/7) sharing 7 wickets between them for the Toronto Kings.
