More quarterfinal action coming up tomorrow from the 2026 Asian Games here in Nisshin. First up we will have Malaysia Women vs Sri Lanka Women at 5:30 AM IST (9 AM Local Time). That will be followed by India Women vs Japan Women at 10:30 AM IST (2 PM Local Time). Do tune in on time for the live coverage.
We had to wait a long, long time before getting any cricket action today. However, the kind of tussle Pakistan and Thailand had out in the middle, made all that wait worth it. The Asian Games 2026 quarterfinals have gotten off to the perfect start.
Pakistan would know that there is a lot of improvement to do as going forward they will face bigger teams. They got themselves out of jail today and once again thanks to their skipper, Fatima Sana, who seems to be the only light for the nation at the moment in Women's cricket.
We all must spare a thought for Thailand. They have played superb bit of cricket right through the match. Yes, a little bit of fine tuning is needed and with exposure like this, they are bound to get better.
1:49 PM IST, 5:19 PM Local Time: Pakistan win by 7 wickets! Phew! How on earth did Pakistan make this match so difficult for themselves? Well, all is well that ends well. They proceed to the semifinals. We all must applaud Thailand for punching well above their weight. At multiple times in the game, they were favourites to win. This is a learning curve for them and they shall surely return as a better team.
We had a delayed start to the game as the outfield took time to dry up and become fit for play to take place. The officials decided that we would have an 11-over game. Pakistan won the toss and elected to bowl first. Fatima Sana struck early to remove Natthakan Chantham for 6. However, the Thailand middle order responded in style. Phannita Maya (15 off 16), Nannapat Koncharoenkai (49 off 38) and Captain Naruemol Chaiwai (10 off 3) fought back to post a competitive 91/4 on the board. Fatima Sana (2/22) and Nashra Sandhu (1/19) were amongst the wickets.
The chase started off on a very positive note for Pakistan. Shawaal Zulfiqar set the tone with a fine 25 off 14. She was aided by Gull Feroza (16 off 13). Pakistan were cruising at 36/0 inside 4 overs before a terrible collapse broke out. Both set batters were dismissed and so were Ayesha Zafar (1 off 4) and Aliya Riaz (4 off 3). From 36/0, the team slipped to 47/4. The Thailand bowlers started building dots and took the required rate to 11 runs per over as Pakistan needed 44 more runs to win off just 4 overs. That is when Fatima Sana switched gears. She smoked 19 runs off the first 5 balls of the 7th over before Eyman Fatima ended it with a maximum to make it a 25-run over. The pendulum swung and it came down to 19 off 18.
Just as you thought Pakistan had things in control both the set batters were dismissed in quick succession. Fatima Sana for 21 off 13 and Eyman for 7 off 5. A few more dots were bowled as a result and Pakistan were 77/6 needing another 17 runs off 10 balls. That is when Tuba Hassan killed the chase with some brilliance. She cleared the fence and backed it up with a four to bring the equation down to 4 runs off 7 balls. She was dismissed off the final ball of the over for 13 off 7. However, the damage was done. Pakistan got over the line with 3 wickets and 2 balls to spare. The pick of the bowlers for Thailand were Onnicha Kamchomphu (3/37), Sunida Chaturongrattana (2/23), Suleeporn Laomi (1/3) and Phannita Maya (1/13).
1 Much fuller and around middle. Hani advances and drills it down to the right of mid on and sneaks a tight single to seal the deal. THAT'S IT! PAKISTAN WOMEN HAVE DEFEATED THAILAND WOMEN BY 3 WICKETS IN AN ENTERTAINING, THRILLING MATCH, AND THEY NOW ADVANCE TO THE SEMI-FINAL OF THE WOMEN'S ASIAN GAMES!
