2:04 AM IST and 9:34 PM Local Time: Kent Spitfires begin the new season of the T20 Blast 2024 with a comprehensive 98-run over Middlesex!
After being put into bat first, Kent did well to post a massive 205/8 in 20 overs. Zak Crawley (26 off 14) and Daniel Bell-Drummond (38 off 24) gave a flying start for the visitors, adding 59 runs for the opening wicket before Tom Helm (2/37) broke it with the dismissal of the former inside the powerplay.
Luke Hollman (3/27) changed the complexion of the innings with a brilliant spell of three-fer in the middle phase, removing Bell-Drummond, Sam Billings and Tawanda Muyeye (29 off 26), who struggled in his stay at the crease.
Joe Denly (56 off 33) took his time before going big and hitting a half-century. Wickets fell in regular intervals at the other end, with Blake Cullen (3/47) bagging a three-wicket haul. Only Joey Evison (13 off 10) and Marcus O'Riordan (13 off 6) played handy short innings' in support of the old foe, taking the team past 200.
Middlesex were nowhere close to chasing the score as they lost wickets one after the other, getting knocked over for just 107 in 14.1 overs. Skipper Stephen Eskinazi, Jack Davies and Hollman all scored exactly 23 runs.
Matthew Parkinson was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 4-0-25-4, including a hat-trick!
While Grant Stewart and Marcus O'Riordan grabbed two scalps each, Xavier Bartlett and Beyers Swanepoel picked up one wicket each.
This win surely lifts the confidence of the Sam Billings-led side, while Middlesex need some motivation to make a comeback!
W WICKETTT!!!! That is the end of Middlesex for the night! Xavier Bartlett hits the final nail in the hosts' coffin! Kent Spitfires start T20 Blast 2024 with a massive win! Bartlett comes back for his third over. Starts from over the wicket. Full and outside the off-stump. Hollman presses forward and drives it on the up with hard hands. Gets a thick outside edge that carries straight to Bell-Drummond at backward point. Kent win by 98 runs!
