So it was a comprehensive performance from the Kolkata Knight Riders. They were always on top and in the end the target of 143 proved to be way too less in the end. It was a pleasure bringing the live commentary and match updates for this clash. Till the next time, me Arya Sekhar Chakraborty and my co-commentator Akshay Bhide signing off for the match. Good night folks. Hope you had a great day just like KKR
Shubman Gill, Man of the Match: I think the ball wasn't spinning much and was easy to hit down the ground. I have practiced power hitting in the last couple of years. I think it was important for us to win. We bowled really and we had to back it up with a good performance. There weren't any long conversations with Morgan. We were just trying to anticipate what the bowlers can try and do. As an opener it is my duty to see my team through.
Dinesh Karthik | Winning captain: Always good to get on board. We have been working really hard. I think one of the advantages of having all-rounders and it is a privilege to use them whenever I can. The fact that we have been able to groom the youngsters is pleasing. It feels good to see the youngsters doing well. I want Gill to enjoy his journey in cricket. One duck doesn't make you a bad player. I need to probably up my game and get a few runs.
Pat Cummins is the Cred Powerplayer of the Match
Eoin Morgan - Nice feeling to get a win under our belt. It's a long tournament, but obviously this win helps us get some momentum and confidence going. We were a bit rusty in our last game against MI, but we won this match with our bowlers, they did a great job restricting a very strong Sunrisers batting line-up. Wickets of Bairstow and Warner at the top put us in a good position. They put them on the back-foot and we knew we didn't have to put ourselves under pressure in the chase. I didn't have to tell him a great deal to be honest, he 's beautiful to watch on the eye, good bat swing, very languid style, magnificent to watch, he's good kid, very hungry to learn and I would love to bat with him once again. I think he deserves all the success (when asked about Shubman Gill). The pitches have been a bit different, you can't be fixated by one pitch, but with the nature of the heat, it should change considerably as the tournament wears on. You should take each game as it comes and try to adapt , stick to your game plan and hopefully it works.
David Warner | Losing captain: I think I got my decision right. For us, our strength is death bowling. I thought it was actually a difficult wicket to accelerate on. I don't regret what I did at the beginning of the game and I stick by my decision. Cummins bowled Test match line and length. There was a little bit of movement. It got harder in the middle. We went four or five overs for 20 probably killed us a bit there. Extra 30 or 40 runs would have been great. We have to go harder at the top. Can't help if the bowlers are bowling right lines and lengths.
Earlier in the day it was David Warner who won the toss and opted to bat. Given the results of the past 6 matches, it was an understandable decision. SRH began on the worst possible note losing their inform player Jonny Bairstow pretty early. Warner looked in good touch but was dismissed against the run of play and from there on it was a very tough ask for SRH. Manish Pandey played brilliantly and scored 51 of 38 deliveries but it didn't prove to be enough in the end. Eventually a score of 142 was never going to be enough for Hyderabad.
A target of 143 was always going to be a straightforward task for KKR unless SRH came out with something special. Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi needed to bowl out of their skins but that was not the case. Despite bagging the prized wicket of Dinesh Karthik, Gill and Morgan played brilliantly against Rashid and chased down the target with utmost comfort in the end. Gill remained unbeaten on 70 of just 62 deliveries while Morgan also played a sensible knock of 42 of 29 deliveries
So it proved to be a dominating performance from the two time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders as they swept past Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets to win their first match of the tournament. Shubhman Gill was tremendous with the bat and the bowlers were spot on to restrict them to a score of 142/4 at the end of their allotted 20 overs. After losing 3 wickets, it was Gill and Morgan who stitched together an unbeaten match-winning partnership which never really allowed SRH to claw their way back into the game. So KKR also opens their account. After two matches, it is only Sunrisers Hyderabad who is yet to win a match in the tournament so far
