Both India and the Windies have very little time to ponder as the five-match T20I series begins in Lucknow on Tuesday [October 6]. However, cricket action never stops on our network, with the likes of Canada Super60, the Irani Cup and the WCL carnival continuing. For now, this is me, AkshayaKrishna Polya, signing off on behalf of my co-commentator, Pritam Dey, helping buddy, Abhishek Sharma, scorer Yogesh Kumar and statistician Aman. We will meet again. Until then, cheers!
India tested plenty of options for the all-rounder and the fast-bowling roles, but haven't found any answer, as the likes of Auqib Nabi, Gurnoor Brar, Anshul Kamboj and Nitish Kumar Reddy couldn't turn their domestic performances into the highest level. However, it's their veterans RO-KO, skipper Shubman Gill, and the wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul, who got his first opportunity with the bat in this series, scoring the bulk of the runs. Earlier in the day, India's T20I side won the gold medal at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya by defeating their arch-rivals Pakistan.
That is it from the marathon third ODI between India and West Indies. The hosts claiming the series 2-1 despite a shocking five-wicket defeat in New Chandigarh tonight. It was a series to forget for the bowlers, with the batters turning up the heat in every game. Shai Hope battled a groin injury but led his side from the front, guiding his team to a famous win as the Windies pulled off their highest-ever successful ODI run chase.
Most Player of the Series Awards for India in ODIs:
TRIVIA: Today’s match is the 8th instance in men’s ODIs where wicketkeepers from both teams scored centuries. KL Rahul and Shai Hope achieved the feat, with the previous instance coming in the Sri Lanka vs Pakistan ODI at Hyderabad in 2023, when Kusal Mendis and Mohammad Rizwan scored hundreds.
Shubman Gill collects the series winners' trophy, and the Indian team poses for the photographs!
Shubman Gill (POTS & India Captain): "[Reflections on the series] Yeah, a lot of boxes ticked. I think there are still some areas that definitely need some fine-tuning.
[Happy with the first innings total] Yeah, I was very happy with the total. I think the game was in control, but, you know, being behind four overs with the dew, and then in the last few overs, I think they took the game away from us. Had we not been shortened by the overs, I think the game might have gone to the last over.
[On bringing Kuldeep Yadav into the attack earlier] No, not really. But, you know, if Gurnoor was... we didn’t know if Gurnoor was going to come back and bowl with his cramps, so there was a bit of uncertainty there. We knew the match was going to go till the end, and he’s a wicket-taker. We wanted—I mean, I wanted—a couple of overs to be there for him at the end.
[Thoughts on the progress of the team] Decently pleased, I would say. But, like I said, I think there are still some areas. I think fielding could be much better. Overall in the series, I think we dropped six or seven catches, which is not a good sign. Leading up to the World Cup, you want your fielding to be top-notch.
[On area which needs to be more fine-tuned] Death bowling as well, I feel. Sometimes we’re not really clear whether we’re attacking or defending, especially when we’re bowling the death overs. In one-day cricket, if the opposition is five or six down, you’re never really sure what fields to take—whether we’re going for the death too early or whether we’re still bowling kind of like middle overs. I think these are some areas that we definitely need to be better at.
[On missing out on a big score today] I mean, you’re always disappointed whenever you get out early. But I think today, I don’t think there could have been much that I would have done on that ball."

Shai Hope (POTM & West Indies Captain): "(On chasing being the norm for West Indies here in India) Yeah, seems to be that in India. It's always easier to chase when dew comes out. Yeah, we wanted to finish the series on a strong note. So, glad that the boys turned up.
(When did he start cramping up today?) Ah, it was around the 30th over while fielding. I felt something in the groin area. So, just tried to fight till the end there.
(On his own assessment of the run chase) Well, firstly, we were a batter down. Probably two if you count Vitel Lawes as well. So, we began our innings being 2 down. So I had a great chat with the great man, MS Dhoni, who said that you always have more time than you think. So, I wasn't looking too much at the end result. I was sticking to my process and tried to take the game down as best as I can and find ways to get some boundaries at the backend. I also thought about the overs that the Indian team were behind. So, I knew that they had to bring a couple of fielders in at the backend. So, it's always tough when you have a tough score to defend and have five men inside the circle. So, I was calculating all those things and was also focusing on my batting.
(His takeaways from the series) I think we have played some good cricket in patches. The batters have been doing a really good job over the last 2-3 years. The batters have been more consistent. We have always asked them to post a big total on the board. It's always difficult to defend in these conditions. We know that here in India, you got to bring your skills out, fight very hard as there will be very small margins for error. As a bowling unit, we will learn from our mistakes."
