West Indies will have to be better than this in all three departments if they are to give the reigning double World Champions a run for their money. They definitely have the ingredients but the question is if can they bring it all together before it's too late in the series. The caravan will now move eastwards. The 2nd T20I will be played in Ranchi on Friday, October 9. Of course, Team CREX will be there to call the action. Do join us then.
India have begun the 5-match T20I series with a bang. They overcame jetlag and a threatening start from Hope to register a comprehensive win in Lucknow. While Shreyas Iyer's maiden T20I ton will hog the limelight, Naman Dhir's excellent performance with the ball in hand on his debut is another big positive for the hosts.
NUMBERS GAME: Shreyas Iyer joins the elite list of Indian batters to score centuries in all three formats, alongside Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
TRIVIA: It was Shreyas Iyer's 2nd POTM award as the captain of India. Only 3 other captains have bagged multiple POTM awards in T20Is for India — Rohit Sharma (7), Suryakumar Yadav (4) and Virat Kohli (3).
Shreyas Iyer (India captain): "(On his excellent numbers in Lucknow) After that exhausting travel (from Japan), I did not even realise where I was. I think I need to wake up this way everyday. Adapted quickly to the conditions nicely and I think it bowling first helped us a lot.
(On the jetlag) We just did not look at it as an excuse. We wanted to come and play as any other cricketer would. We saw the excitement of India vs West Indies in the ODIs and how amazing it was. But coming into T20Is, we know how destructive a side they are. It was important to stick to our process and that is what we did. Great efforts by every individual.
(On getting his maiden T20I century) Well, definitely exultant. That's the word I would use today by the performance. Honestly, I was thinking of getting my first century. It came through. So, definitely want to say that dreams do come true.
(Is it an objective to win a manner that takes away hope from opposition?) Winning tastes different. That's what we keep talking in the dressing room. If it is your day, make sure that you win the match for the team. Today, it was my day. Previous couple of games, there were other batters who finished the game. Overall, it was a comprehensive performance. If we continue the same way, we'll be a destructive team in T20s.
(On Naman Dhir) Special player, I must say. Showing that attitude and approach, wanting to bowl in those crucial moments. He realised that the ball was turning and capitalised on it. Commendable performance by him. I love his attitude.
Looking forward to a (long night's sleep). I am already sleepy. I could see Axar's eyes were already red. I am sure all of us are (sleepy)."
