On that note, we finally come to the end of our coverage for this historic match. The 3-hour delay might have dampened the spirits initially, but the 10 overs of cricket that unfolded post it would linger on in our memories for a while. Time for the trio of Darpan Tikiya, Ajay Pal Singh and Raju Khariya to say goodbye. Special thanks to Aman for bringing some intriguing stats around the game. Sayonara!
Perhaps, this game will act as a wake-up call before India begin their defence of the Asian Games gold. Remember, they are pre-seeded in the quarterfinals. For Japan, who are going to face Nepal and Afghanistan in the group stage, this match will act as a big confidence booster.
As the sun sets in Sano, it is a new dawn for Japanese cricket. They came within touching distance of upsetting the reigning double world champions. India do win the Suzuki Cup, but the fulcrum of conversations post this game will be the odd choice to bat first in a 5-over game on an unknown pitch after winning the toss, the struggle against the spinning ball and the overall impressive display by the hosts.
Shreyas Iyer (India Captain): "[How significant was this game?] Firstly, congratulations to India and Japan for 75 years of diplomatic relations. It is something that we keep talking about when we arrived. It was a long travel for us, it took three hours for us to reach here. But at the back of our minds, we had only thing that we wanted to play the game and excite the crowd. Fans were thriving to see to it that this match was organised. Congratulations to everyone who has been present over here to deliver this game. Even though it was five overs, I was glad we got a game. Overall, it was an exciting game, they were also brilliant with their performances.
[On how he's taking captaincy role] I think it is a pleasure to be leading the Indian team. With the performances we have seen in the past, winning so many trophies. It is a great responsibility and without responsibility, doesn't come pressure and I am someone who thrives under pressure. It is a great role for me and I feel captaincy is something that gets the best out of me.
[On looking for another gold at Asian Games] See, that is the eventual goal. But it is important that we take one step at a time. First we go to Nagoya, assess the conditions and have an awareness of how the wicket is going to play. I am sure the other teams will come with the same motive. But for us it is about setting a standard and keep going beyond that. Not think about what has happened in the past or what's going to come. The more we stick to the present, the better for us."
Shreyas Iyer collects the trophy and poses for a few pictures.
Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming (Japan captain): "(His immediate thoughts) Extremely proud. Plus, I have been saying it to some of the boys that when it gets that close, it is a little bit tougher to take. The emotions are running pretty high in our group. The fact that we have been able to run it to the last ball against what is the best team in the world in my opinion is pretty special. To hear Shreyas talk about the progression of the Japan team is quite surreal. Extremely proud of this group and to the broader cricketing community. To the title sponsors, to the BCCI, to JCA, we are grateful. This game would not have been possible without them. Even beyond that. There were people working on the ground since last night to make this game happen. The volunteers, our female team who are here to support us. Just proud of not only our boys but the entire community.
(Feelings at the halfway stage) We just ran in with a lot of excitement. 'Anything is possible' was the attitude. They have got some world class spinners. Washington, Axar and Ravi Bishnoi bowling on our Sano wicket was going to be an extreme challenge, we knew. At 6.5 an over (required rate), your mind does wander and think. You get one or two off the middle and you never know. Extremely proud for us to take it to the last ball of the game. I am sure that there will be a couple of moments that will play on our mind on the long bus road to Nagoya. It is a feeling of pride at the moment.
(On Charlie Hinze and the rest of the bowling group) Charlie (Hinze) has been with our side for a while now. Our 17-year old prodigy. I was a little bit disappointed that the 15-year old prodigy Vaibhav was not a part of the playing XI today. He is progressing really well. He bowled well, took the first and the fifth. I was not surprised with how he went. Then, Ibrahim Takahashi and Ben Ito-Davis were great. To be able to bowl to some of the best players of spin in world that way was great from them.
(On the upcoming Asian Games) I think that today was a momentous occasion. A first game against a full member for us. Then, we have a 36 hour turn around before we face another full member (Afghanistan at the Asian Games) We will rest up tomorrow and then, prepare for it. Obviously, if we can win one of the matches, we could play another full member after a couple of games. That is our goal. Strong opponents, but we will be competing."
Shreyas Iyer (POTM): "[On adapting to the conditions] Was turning square, honestly speaking. It was a very difficult wicket to bat on. We saw the openers as well, who are used to scoring runs consistently. Not able to gauge the pace of the spin and I decided when I got in that I needed to take singles and doubles and rotate the strike as much as possible but it was difficult to do that as well. But, honestly speaking, I decided that I will play to the merit of the ball and see, plan accordingly. If the ball is turning and holding a bit, I will just use the pace of the ball and nudge it for singles and doubles.
[On how important it was to get use to the conditions ahead of upcoming Asian Games] I always keep saying that five overs game, it can go anywhere. It doesn't matter how good a team you are, because the oppositions are also competitive, and the attitude and approach the Japanese team showed today was impeccable, and kudos to them. The approach was outstanding. So I'm sure that they are on the right track right now, and they've got a couple more matches against Afghanistan and Nepal. They would be brilliant. And for us, it was a great practice, knowing about the wicket as well."
