An enthralling day of Test cricket comes to an end, with a total of 13 wickets falling on the opening day, all claimed by the seamers. New Zealand A have had the upper hand and finish Day 1 in a commanding position. The experienced India A batters, including the regulars from the Indian Test side, failed to make an impact with the bat, leaving the visitors with plenty of work to do.
11 AM IST & 6:30 PM Local Time: STUMPS, DAY 1! A sensational finish to the opening day from India A, who have managed to claw their way back with three crucial wickets in the final few overs. However, New Zealand A remain in a commanding position as they close Day 1 at 135/3, with a lead of 22 runs.
New Zealand A won the toss and elected to bowl first, making full use of the conditions as all four seamers put in an impressive shift. India A endured a dismal batting performance, with only four batters managing to register double-digit scores. Devdutt Padikkal (32) and Yash Rathod (44*) were the only two who showed some resistance as the visitors were bundled out for just 113. Simon Keene was the standout bowler, claiming a superb five-wicket haul with figures of 5/24.
New Zealand A continued to dictate terms with the bat as openers Rhys Mariu and Curtis Heaphy looked assured at the crease. Mariu was dropped early by Yashasvi Jaiswal and made India A pay dearly, building a commanding 132-run opening partnership with Heaphy. The Indian bowlers beat the outside and inside edges repeatedly but had to wait until the 39th over for their first breakthrough, when Mukesh Choudhary dismissed Mariu for 76.
India A then finished the day on a strong note as Auqib Nabi struck twice in two balls, removing Jayden Lennox and Tim Robinson for ducks. Heaphy remained unbeaten on 37 as New Zealand A closed the opening day at 135/3, leading by 22 runs.
