Legend of the Match: Asela Gunaratne
S Sreesanth (Mumbai Spartans Captain): "Thank you for the support to the crowd. This ground is beautiful, the groundsmen work really hard.
[where they went wrong] One of the bowlers were not really quite to the mark. It's a retired league but I should express myself that one of their bowlers was throwing the ball. It's a great game nonetheless.
[on hitting that six] Praveen is one of the most experienced customers. He has done so well in first-class as well but he used his experience. He bowled well. Gunaratne missed out on the batting but what a bowler! He has done extremely well everywhere in the world. He took a magnificent catch as well. Today is the first day, we will go back and we will celebrate this as well."
10:48 PM IST, Local Time: The India Captains kick start their LLC 4.0 campaign with a 23-run win against the Mumbai Spartans in Haldwani. The Captains won the toss and elected to bat, a decision which was proven right in the end.
Sheldon Jackson top scored with 51 off 31 deliveries hitting 5 fours and 3 sixes. Praveen Gupta played an allround role scoring 27 not out in 19 balls and then claiming 3/16 to skittle the Mumbai Spartans.
Spinner Amit Verma was the pick of the bowlers for Spartans claiming 3/29 in 3 overs. KC Cariappa and Subodh Bhati picked up a couple of wickets each to restrict the Captains for 150/9 in 20 overs.
The Spartans openers provided a healthy start with Bharat Chipli taking the aggressive route and Asad Pathan batting around him. The openers added 39 runs in 4.3 overs before a miscommunication had Pathan run out for 10.
Bharat Chipli got a life on 35 as Gaurav Tomar dropped a catch off Praveen Gupta's bowling. Chipli was finally dismissed by Asela Gunaratne for 47 in 30 balls with Hashim Amla taking a screamer at long off. Chipli played his part with 3 fours and 4 sixes but no other batter could build on from that innings.
Besides the openers only Verma (18 off 18), Jaykishan Kolsawala (11* off 12) and KC Cariappa (11 off 9) scored into double digits. Gunaratne wreaked havoc in the middle overs with 4/20. Gupta claimed 3/16 with Gaurav Tomar (1/23) and Imtiyaz Ahmed (1/20) finishing with a wicket apiece in their economic spells.
