Earlier in the day, Essex won the toss and opted to bat first. They made a positive start, with Michael-Kyle Pepper making the most of an early reprieve and scoring the bulk of the runs during the Powerplay. Essex reached 52/1 at the end of the first six overs before Pepper departed for a well-made 47 shortly after the fielding restrictions were lifted.
Contributions from Luc Benkenstein and Matthew Critchley kept the innings moving through the middle overs, even as Sussex Sharks chipped away with regular wickets. However, Simon Harmer (46* off 17) produced a sensational late flourish, helping Essex plunder 48 runs from the final two overs. The last over alone yielded 31 runs as Essex finished with a formidable 204/6.
In reply, Sussex suffered a disastrous start to the chase. Sam Cook struck twice in the second over to remove both openers, while Shane Snater added another wicket in his second over as the new-ball pair ripped through the top order. Sussex were left reeling at 30/4 at the end of the Powerplay and already faced a steep climb.
