Earlier, after being invited to bat first, Surrey produced a batting masterclass to post a massive 240/4 in their 20 overs. Openers Jason Roy (65 off 38) and Laurie Evans (40 off 23) laid the perfect platform with a blistering 98-run opening stand, taking Surrey to 75/0 in the Powerplay. Although Matt Critchley (2/36) removed both openers, Surrey never lost momentum.
Captain Ollie Pope and Josh Philippe then took charge with a stunning 105-run partnership off just 50 balls. Pope smashed 59 off 26, while Philippe remained unbeaten on 61 off 30. Daniel Lawrence added a quickfire 12 off 3* at the end as Surrey stormed to a daunting 240/4.
Chasing a daunting 241, Essex put up a spirited fight but eventually finished on 233/8, falling just seven runs short. Paul Walter led the charge with a sensational 78 off 30 balls, smashing 12 fours and four sixes, while the hosts raced to 95/1 in the Powerplay. However, Surrey hit back with regular wickets as Reece Topley dismissed Walter soon after his fifty, triggering a middle-order collapse that halted Essex’s momentum.
