Until then, savour the madness of Rawalpindi, because cricket rarely writes a story quite like this. I am Dev Rajawat, signing off, along with my co-commentator, Karthik Raj, scorer, Asraj Khan, and statistician, Aman. That’s it from our side. Thanks for joining. Goodbye from this tab! TAKE CARE! BREATHE AND SMILE! CIAO!!!!
The celebrations belong to the Islanders tonight, but the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series rolls on. Next up is Pakistan versus England in Lahore on Sunday, October 25, with England seeking a response and Pakistan ready to seize their opportunity.
What a match. PHEW! Brook’s brilliance, Rathnayake’s resistance, Shanaka’s fireworks and Liyanage’s final flourish combined to create an ODI that had everything - records, collapses, comebacks and a finish worthy of the grandest stage. England produced a total that would win most matches, but Sri Lanka answered with courage when the odds were stacked against them, turning despair at 24/2 into one of cricket’s most extraordinary triumphs. For England, the lesson is that even 429 is never safe without the final breakthroughs - for Sri Lanka, this chase will live long in the memory as proof of their remarkable batting depth and belief.
Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka Captain): "[About chasing] I won the toss in five games, every game we had to chase because of dew. We have done very well in the first innings. As a captain, I enjoyed that we chased this down.
[Did you guys have a chat about how to approach this chase?] Yeah, of course. Myself and coach talked about batting normally in the first few overs. Then, we decided that Dasun (Shanaka) can come earlier. The guys batted very well, they showed their character and took responsibility. Avishka (Fernando), Pavan Rathnayake, Dasun and Janith (Liyanage), all played well. Very happy as a captain. Everyone believed we can do it. Everyone showed their character, we know how to play and we can do anything.
[Where is the party tonight?] We have a small party but we have to focus on the next game as well."
Harry Brook (England Captain): (On their defeat despite scoring a total of 429) "It was an incredible game of cricket. I thought both teams were exceptional, and Sri Lanka just outplayed us, unfortunately. We couldn't quite hit our straps with the ball and played into their strengths a little bit. They played exceptional cricket to chase down 429. I think it's the first time in 20 years that a team has achieved that, which is incredible. Fair play to them.
(On his double century despite the defeat) It was a nice innings, but unfortunately, it doesn't mean anything now that we're on the losing side. It has no value whatsoever in my eyes.
(On England's response after two consecutive defeats) We've got to go back to the drawing board a little bit. We know where we've gone wrong. Unfortunately, we didn't execute well enough with the ball. We've got a great opportunity in the next couple of games to try to nail down a spot in the final. We've got to keep things simple, back ourselves, pick our chins up, and go again in the next game."
Pavan Rathnayake (Player of the Match): "[How do you feel about this award and win?] Very happy. Important win for our team.
[What was the thought process when the team had to chase 430?] We thought the wicket is very good. We backed our normal game, that's it. We had a very good team game. We had good partnerships.
[Is this the better of your two hundreds?] Yeah, this one."
Player of the Match: Pavan Rathnayake
