What a sensational performance from Team India. Who would gave India a chance at the start of the day. Not many to be honest. But the spirited Indian team had other ideas. Historic win. We now have nine days before the start of the 3rd Test. Till the next time, it's ta-ta and goodnight from Arya Sekhar Chakraborty and my fellow commentators Kingshuk Kusari and Arjun Bhalla.
KL Rahul- I have been looking at the honours board if they had put it permanently. Having been put into bat, we had to give the team a good start and make sure we put up a decent total. Partnership with Rohit was very important. Yeah it is, we have been here for a couple of months and we have been working really hard on our game. Even in the first game, the batsmen showed a lot of discipline. Really happy to pit up a performance like this. That's what you expect from two quality teams. That shows how both teams wants to win. We don't mind a bit of banter. That actually got us going. The bowler's had a crack at them.
KL Rahul is the Player of the Match.
Virat Kohli, Indian skipper- Well superproud of the whole team. The way we stuck to our plans after being put in. Our batting was exceptional. The first day was challenging but from there on it was difficult for the bowlers. It was absolutely fantastic from Bumrah and Shami with the bat. We though we could get them out in 60 overs. Yeah just to applaud what Jasprit and Shami did. It takes a lot of character to play in those circumstance for bowlers who doesn't bat much. They also got the new ball and gave us two important breakthroughs early on. Our lower order was contributing earlier but that went away in the last few matches. But the batting coach has worked with them and now they have the desire in them to do the job for the team. Look I have been a part of the winning Test match as a player under MS. We knew in that game we had out them under pressure but here the situation was different. Siraj was quite exceptional. What happened in the field gave us the motivation to see the match off. Anything under fifty five overs I would have not felt great. Today in the second half the crowd got behind us. We are really happy with the support we got. It comes a day later after Independence day. This is a very happy day for us. We have three more games. We won't sit down with our laurels. We will get more lethal. I get many wrong review but if you don't take a chance you will never know.
Joe Root, England captain- Yeah I mean you are always trying to find ways to deal with situations like that. Unfortunately we couldn't quite see it off today. Really frustrating but lot of cricket still left in the series and we will come back strong in the next three Tests. As a captain I could have taken the responsibility. We were looking like winning the game and then falling behind. Tactially I could have been better. I think more than anything, just probably a few things slightly wrong. They played really well, the partnership between Bumrah and Shami. Mark Wood and Moeen Ali gave everything, as you would expect from the attitude that goes about things. Loves seeing Mo (Moeen Ali) enjoy Test cricket. As a side we are used to playing five series, we have found ourselves in this position before and have done the job. Certainly the crowd didn't disappoint us.
Time for the presenation ceremony.
Arya: There was a brief partnership between Buttler and Ollie Robinson which gave England hopes. However, Bumrah did the trick with a brilliant slower delivery as he deceived him with the change of pace. Mohammed Siraj then came back to take the wicket of Jos Buttler which was the final nail in the coffin for England. He managed to bag the wicket of Anderson in the same over with another perfect line and length delivery as the Indian players went wild.
Arya: The wicket of Joe Root opened the gates suddenly and India was all over England at that juncture. Again the man to give India the most important breakthrough was none other than Jasprit Bumrah. From there on, Moeen Ali and Jos Buttler built a partnership and defied the Indian bowling line-up for a while. Buttler survived a dropped chance and looked comfortable at the crease after the reprieve. It was Mohammed Siraj who came back with back to back wickets in his next spell which again rocked the home team. Brilliant deliveries to left-handers brought about the downfall of Moeen Ali and Sam Curran. Curran also became the first batsman in the history to bag a king pair in a Test match in Lords.
Arya: Rohit Sharma dropped the catch of Haseeb Hameed early on. While Hameed never looked settled at the crease, Joe Root again looked in fine touch and played some delightful shots during his knock of 33 Haseeb Hameed was eventually dismissed by a sensational in dipper from Ishant Sharma. Jonny Bairstow's LBW call just at the stroke of tea could have been the moment of the match. It was a great review taken which gave India that extra impetus coming into the final session.
Arya: Eventually Virat Kohli declared after playing just a shade over one over after lunch. The declaration came at the right time as the English openers didn't get an opportunity to stay at the dressing room for forty minutes and then come out to bat. Instead they had to rush for padding up and they looked unsettled right from ball one. Jasprit Bumrah bagged the wicket of Rory Burns in the opening over while Shami bagged the wicket of Dom Sibley with a pearler.
