The match almost went down to the wire but a century stand between Janith Liyanage and Jimmy Neesham ensured that Colombo Kaps never faced hiccups at the death and clinched a victory by six wickets in the final over. Janith Liyanage (POTM): "(What was the approach when he came in to bat?) I think the wicket was offering quite a bit at that time. So I decided to spend some time in the middle. Once I started feeling comfortable, I backed myself to play my shots, and fortunately, it worked out for me.
(Challenges for batters on this surface) The wicket was a bit inconsistent. It was turning at times, and some deliveries were also keeping low. My plan was simply to trust my shots. We also had a couple of power-hitters still to come, so I just wanted to build the innings until they could take over."

We just kept repeating them, dropping catches at crucial times, misfields after a no-ball. You can't really be doing these things in a professional game because if you give a couple of chances to a good player, this is what's going to happen. So, it was a terrible game, one of the worst we've played.

They lost early wickets, their momentum was halted in the first half of the run chase but the pair of Janith Liyanage and Jimmy Neesham stepped up and their partnership of an unbeaten 115 runs have taken the Kaps home. They will be elated with this victory as one of the batting mainstays, Kusal Mendis was retired hurt because of a hamstring injury. Kandy Royals will look to redeem themselves as they are currently at the bottom of the points table.
Colombo Kaps captain Kusal Mendis elected to bowl first after winning the toss. The going was not smooth for the Kandy Royals in the start. Kusal Perera was wrongly adjudged LBW off Binura Fernando and they lost Sediqullah Atal and Dale Philips cheaply. They were 31/3 in the 4th over when their skipper Angelo Mathews joined Lahiru Udara in the crease. They batted sensibly to add 51 runs in 40 balls. The run rate was not brisk but the stand was an extremely effective one. Lahiru Udara completed his half-century and was dismissed next ball by Jimmy Neesham. His 53-run knock was a quality one.
The 65-run stand between Moeen Ali and Mathews was the foundation stone of the Kandy batting. Moeen Ali hit four sixes and a boundary on his way to scoring 41 off 17 balls. His cameo was a valiant one. Angelo Mathews played an anchoring knock of 45 from 41 balls to help his team safely negotiate the middle overs. They were 147 in the 17th over when they lost Moeen Ali and eventually lost five more wickets in the next 21 balls, scoring 32. They ended with 179, losing all the wickets. The latter cleaned up Rubin Hermann with an inswinging length ball. Kusal Mendis had some trouble in his right leg and he walked off retired hurt. Sadeera Samarawickrama found the mid-off fielder off Angelo Mathews. The Royals were 8/2, effectively three wickets down, when Kamindu Mendis and Ben McDermott were batting.
McDermott took on Mathews and hit a maximum and followed it up with a boundary in the fifth over and in the next over, he took on Thushara for a boundary. Kamindu Mendis struggled initially but took on Moeen Ali and Hasaranga after the powerplay. The momentum was halted again as McDermott (26) and Kamindu (22) were dismissed in quick succession. At 67/4 in the 10th over, Janith Liyanage and Jimmy Neesham were in the middle.
