Right then, we are done with the penultimate match of the group stage of the Lanka Premier League 2026. Galle Gallants have got their fifth victory from 8 games and have confirmed a finish in top two. They have marched onto the first qualifier where they will lock horns with Jaffna Kings. Colombo Kaps have also qualified but they will have to play the Eliminator.
Who will play against the Kaps in the Eliminator? To determine that, we will comeback again tomorrow. Dambulla Sixers, the team at the nadir of the points table will face the Jaffna-based franchise in the evening. If they become the winner, they will play the eliminator. The points will be same with Kandy Royals but because of having a superior NRR, they will topple them. But if they lose, their elimination is guaranteed.

(What would have been your decision had you won the toss?) I would have done the same thing (bowl first) because of the weather conditions but luckily we got there.
(You are in the top two. Areas you want to improve?) Of course that is what we were aiming for (the first two spots). That gives us two chances to qualify for the final. Kamindu Mendis (Colombo Kaps Captain): "(Should you have opted to bat first?) No. Considering the weather, we felt bowling first was the right decision. I don't regret that call. We made the decision and backed it. Unfortunately, we ended up losing by 13 runs. Throughout this tournament, we've been involved in close games like this, so hopefully we'll do better in the playoffs.
(On areas to improve) I think the boys have been doing really well, but there are still areas we need to improve in both batting and bowling. Mistakes are bound to happen. The important thing is that we learn from them, and hopefully we'll come back stronger in the next round."

11:02 PM IST and Local Time: Galle Gallants have defeated the Colombo Kaps by 13 runs and have booked a berth in the first qualifier which is scheduled on the 5th of August. It was a complete team effort from the Gallants and they are the deserving winners of this game.
Colombo Kaps won the toss and elected to bowl first despite most of the teams batting first have won here at Pallekele this season. Gallants were dented a bit as their regular skipper Dasun Shanaka was ill and played only as an impact sub. Charith Asalanka was the stand-in skipper and the southpaw shone with the bat.
Today, the Gallants sent the Victorian batter Thomas Rogers to open with his countrymate Sam Harper but the former could score just 4. After the early wicket loss, Harper and Asalanka teed off and added 42 runs in just 19 balls. Wanuja Sahan clipped the top of Harper's (28) off stump and Dinura Kalupahana joined his skipper. They batted 36 balls together to score just 47. Dinura, despite hitting two sixes, could score only 20 off 21. Chamika Karunaratne perished early today as he mistimed a cutter delivery of Jimmy Neesham.
With 103/4 on the board, Charith Asalanka and Sahan Arachchige decided to rebuild and they did not hold back. Both of them were at their fluent best and added 66 in just 42 balls. Sahan was flummoxed by his namesake Wanuja Sahan but he scored 43 off 29 balls before that. Asalanka played a captain's knock and hit 7 fours and 2 sixes on his way to score 58 off 37 balls. Dasun Shanaka, despite being ill, did not deter from hitting Jimmy Neesham in the final over. He hit a boundary and two sixes in the first three legal balls and remained unbeaten on 21 off 8 to help his team to propel over 200. Galle Gallants finished with 201/6.
For the Colombo Kaps, Wanuja Sahan picked up 2 wickets for 28 runs in his 3 overs but the presence of two left handers in Asalanka and Arachchige in the middle overs deterred Kamindu Mendis from bowling Wanuja his full quota of 4 overs. Mujeeb Ur Rahman (1/37), Milan Rathnayake (1/14), Jimmy Neesham (1/35) and Malsha Tharupathi (1/16) got their names to the wicket column.
Colombo Kaps came in pursuit of the hefty target of 202 and a fantastic catch at the cover region by Tharindu Rathnayake sent Rubin Hermann (5) back. Sadeera Samarawickrama and Ben McDermott, who came in as an impact sub replacing Mujeeb, added 46 runs for the second wicket but both of them rode on their luck. Sadeera hit 5 fours and 2 sixes to score 37 off 19 before Mohammad Nawaz removed him in the 7th over. Just three balls later, Kamindu Mendis (1) was trapped in front by Nawaz and that was a massive jolt. Two in-form batters were back and the Kaps were 65/3.
Mohammad Nawaz capped off his spell by dismissing Ashen Bandara (3) in the 9th over and his brilliant spell read 3/24 from 4 overs. McDermott continued to struggle and crawled to 38 off 28 but Sachindu Colombage's flighted delivery got his number. The Gallants' spinners controlled the middle over very well as Tharindu trapped Liyanage in front. Jimmy Neesham restored some momentum as he hit Sachindu Colombage for two fours and a sixes and the Kaps got four bye runs. But Eshan Malinga came back and the pacer dismissed Neesham (20).
With 121/7 on the board and the pair of Malsha Tharupathi and Milan Rathnayake at the crease, the Kaps were staring down the barrel. But the duo decided not to give up sans a fight and Malsha read the charge. They played it out till the 16th over and then took Akif Javed on as the left arm pacer conceded 16. Malsha was batting well for his 36 off 15 but Eshan Malinga took his wicket and the Kaps slumped further. 29 were required from 2 overs and Milan hit Javed for a maximum but Javed dismissed him in that over.
