All eyes now turn to the final league game of the season between Dublin Guardians and Rotterdam Dockers. It’s simple for the Dockers — win, and they qualify for the playoffs, knocking the Wolves out. A defeat for Rotterdam will clear the path for Belfast Wolves. The qualification race goes right down to the final game!
End of a long, long game here in Dublin! Rain interrupted both innings for a considerable period, but eventually it was the Belfast Wolves who got over the line. However, the victory hasn’t done them much of a favour in terms of qualification. Edinburgh Castle Rockers have secured their playoff spot alongside the Amsterdam Flames.
Glenn Maxwell (Belfast Wolves Captain & POTM): "(On being POTM as well as securing a win) Ya, I think the way we played this game was simply outstanding. We managed to put ourselves in a strong position before the rain break. After that, I thought the game could go either way. It was a great effort from the boys to push it as deep as we could but unfortunately the rain came at the wrong time.
(On his batting innings) It was a little bit tricky. I sort of wanted to give myself time in the middle before going hard at the bowlers. I wanted to work out how difficult the surface actually was. I tried to take a couple of calculative risks, tried to force them to bowl in different lengths and also bowl defensive as well. After that, David Miller came and finished off the game beautifully for us. Also Harry Manenti played a key role as I felt he played really well in that partnership with me. It gave us the injection we needed towards the backend.
(How much did it change in their bowling innings after the rain break?) I probably think that the ball got a little bit softer and they hit a couple of boundaries after which when the ball came back, the sharp seam disappeared. We probably struggled to get the same variable bounce throughout the rest of the innings. Yeah, then rain came in, we did our bit and Chris Jordan did a great job in the death with the ball. Future is in Dublin's hands now and we will be watching that closely as a group.
(On his experience in this tournament leading the Wolves as well as being the co-owner) Yeah, it's been brilliant. We are really lucky that we have got a wonderful group of people from the staff to all the players. The management has done a great job of getting them together and hopefully this is the start of a long history in the tournament."
Player of the Match: Glenn Maxwell
Mitchell Santner (Edinburgh Castle Rockers captain):"(Does it feel you haven't quite lost today?) I mean, at the start of the day, we knew if we won we were straight through. Shame not to win the game, but we did what we had to do to get to the playoffs. That's what you want to do, because you go straight through.
(On his knowledge about the DLS calculations) There was a few numbers, nobody really knew what that number was, just going out there and play well from the start. We bowled well with the new ball, they probably got a few more than we wanted them to, but Maxi and Miller, when they get going, pretty tough to stop.
(On areas of concern) The conditions are a bit different to Holland, slow to adjust in these games. Today, we got beat by two very good players with the bat, got close in the end, obviously a few things to look at and reflect on after this game, depending on when we play our next game.
(On feeling of qualifying) Finals cricket is where you want to be, after the start, it might be a little bit disappointing that you didn't reach the top, finals cricket is a different game, matter of who turns up. Hope that's us."
6:52 PM IST & 2:22 PM Local Time: End of the Innings! A run chase filled with calculations, particularly for the Rockers, comes to an end. Edinburgh Castle Rockers fall short by 9 runs, but that is enough to see them through to the playoffs. For the Wolves, their qualification hopes now rest on the Dublin Guardians.
Earlier in the day, in a must-win contest for both sides, especially the Belfast Wolves, they were asked to bat first. The Wolves got off to a cautious start and found themselves at 36/2 at the end of the Powerplay. A passing shower then brought a brief interruption before play resumed, and at the halfway stage of their innings, the Wolves had moved to 62/2.
The dangerous duo of Glenn Maxwell (82* off 40) and David Miller (38 off 19) then took centre stage. The pair went hammer and tongs in the final five overs, adding 78 runs to propel the Belfast Wolves to a commanding 190/4 from their 20 overs. The equation was clear — for the Wolves to keep qualification in their own hands, they needed to win by more than 56 runs.
In reply, the Rockers lost both openers inside the Powerplay. From their approach, it appeared they had moved away from the original target of 191 and shifted their focus towards the crucial 135-run mark. Had they chased down 191, they would have qualified directly for the Final, while crossing 134 would have been enough to secure a playoff spot, and they opted for the latter route.
