What a cracking start we have witnessed to the 2026 edition of the Women's Caribbean Premier League. The Trinbago Knight Riders defeated the defending champions, Barbados Tridents, by 21 runs while defending 155.
Deandra Dottin (Trinbago Knight Riders Women Captain): "(Thoughts at the halfway mark) Fifty-fifty. I just think that we were a couple of runs short for the start that we had and how we were going. But after the game started to play out in the second innings, we realised that once we won the powerplay, got some of the shine off the ball and started bowling with variations and slower balls and stuff like that, we could pull it back.
(About Suzie Bates runout) Ah, that is actually me just flying! But yeah, that’s me. That’s me at point, always. It’s just a matter of trying to dictate and timing when the player hits the ball, and timing the dive as well. So, I actually nailed it today, and I’m happy to get a run-out for the team.
(On getting past the defending champions) To be honest, I’m pretty happy with our overall performance, especially the start that we had when we were batting. We didn’t finish the way we wanted to, but I’m still happy with the finish. The most important part that I’m happy about is the way we pulled back the innings. I think after we got Hayley, then Qiana, and that was it. And then Kiran. I think that was a turning point as well.
(About Samara Ramnath's performance today) Oh my God, she was a beauty! To be honest, I kind of forgot about her when, you know, and then I thought, “Yeah, Samara.” So then I brought her on to bowl. But yeah, she’s a very good upcoming star, you know, and it’s just about keeping motivating her and encouraging her to put in the hard work to always have that success."

Hayley Matthews (Barbados Tridents Women Captain): "(About restricting the TKR at 155) Yeah, I certainly think after the first 10 overs, we did a really good job to pull them back. Look, they were on par for somewhere close to 200, so that second 10 overs, I think, was really good from the bowlers. We were able to take wickets at regular intervals and, yeah, I think we were pretty happy to be chasing 150 at the break.
(What went wrong in the chase) Yeah, I think towards the end there, probably the last six or seven overs, we started losing wickets in clusters. The injury, I think, with that piece of fielding was definitely a game-changer to get Bassey out, and I think that just shifted the momentum quite a bit there.
(Plans going forward) Yeah, just to bounce back fast. We have two preliminary matches to go, and, yeah, I don’t think you necessarily have to win too many to be able to qualify for that playoff game. So, it’s just about bouncing back really quickly and refocusing. I think we did a lot of things right today and probably only a few things wrong. So, I think once we fine-tune the things that didn’t go so well, we should be back in good stead to be in a winning position later on, in the next match."

So, it was just about being really precise and having a few plans in place, which I obviously cannot disclose. But yeah, I’m really happy that it worked out.

Also, in between the partnership they had, they were around 82 after 10 overs, and I thought it had got a little too close for comfort. But I guess the way we started with the bat was amazing. That is something that we, as a team at TKR, have been looking for. I still think we were 15–20 runs short, considering the kind of start we had. But the bowling attack—Kapi and everyone else—just stepped in and made it easy for us.

4 AM IST, 6:30 PM Local Time: Trinbago Knight Riders Women get the better of defending champions Barbados Tridents Women by 21 runs. It was a team effort with the bat, followed by Shikha Pandey's three-wicket haul, that made defending 155 a relatively easy task.
Earlier in the game, Hayley Matthews won the toss and invited the Knight Riders to bat first. An opening stand of 67 between Laura Harris and Yastika Bhatia set the tone for the visitors. After first six overs, the Knight Riders were 71 for 1. Deandra Dottin made 14 off 15 before losing her wicket on the final ball of the 10th over.
In the last 10 overs, Tridents fought back really well to bowl out the Knight Riders for 155. Qiana Joseph was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 for 27. Suzie Bates and Hayley Matthews picked up two wickets apiece, while Afy Fletcher got one. Yastika Bhatia made 35, while Madeline Penna scored 27. The rest of Knight Riders batters could not even get into double figures.
