But can they now sustain this momentum? They clash with an even higher ranked team — hosts Afghanistan — in less than 48 hours time, in the second match of the tri-series. Of course, Team CREX will be here to call it. Do join us then. For now, this is Darpan Tikiya saying goodbye on the behalf of Manan Mehta, Abhishek Sharma, Ashok Dayma and Dev Rajawat. See you soon!
What's more? The comprehensive manner in which they won today will please them even more. Sikandar Raza achieved his first ODI win as a captain. Also, given that we are less than an year away from what will be a home World Cup for Zimbabwe and their first appearance in the marquee tournament since 2015, this result augurs well for them.
Zimbabwe and Bangladesh have locked horns 4 times in ODIs this year now. Thrice the Chevrons have come out on top. Guess it is worth reminding that the latter are higher ranked team amongst the two.
Sikandar Raza has joined Grant Flower in an elite group of Zimbabweans with over 4,000 runs and 100 wickets, becoming just the second player and 27th overall to achieve it.
Sikandar Raza (Zimbabwe Captain): "[Thoughts on the victory] Yeah, I thought that after the shaky start, that partnership held the innings together really well. We’ve looked at the last ten games and analysed all the data as well. So, to get to 271 was certainly a good effort. I thought those two boys, Wellington and Newman, gave us momentum. Cricket is such a momentum-driven game, and that was very important in helping us finish the first innings on 271. At least it gave us something to bowl at. Looking at the statistics as well, 265 has been par, so I was pretty happy with 271.

[Regarding the fightback with the ball] Yeah, certainly. I thought Bless was very unlucky and bowled well. We needed two guys to bowl well together. In the past, we’ve been guilty of having one bowler perform well while the other struggled. That’s something we’ll discuss, and we need to improve on it in international cricket. But I was really pleased with the character the boys showed. The opposition were ahead of the game after 14 or 15 overs. They were only two wickets down and had scored close to 100 runs. The way we came back and fought back was certainly pleasing.

[About the fielding in today's contest] Yeah, certainly. We’ve spent a lot of time working on our fielding, and we’ve lost a lot of games because of it as well. We want to be known as a good fielding side. Fielding is non-negotiable. It comes down to attitude, how much you enjoy being out in the middle with your teammates, and how much you want to fight against the opposition. Fielding is something we can control.

Dropped catches and missed fielding opportunities happen from time to time, but if your attitude is right and you go for every ball, eventually things start to click. Those catches that weren’t sticking begin to stick. I think that comes down to the great attitude these boys have and the culture we’ve built.

[On his personal milestones] I don’t care about these things, to be honest. Reaching 100 international wickets is certainly something that, more than me, I think my teammates, family and fans would be proud of. It’s been a long journey, but Alhamdulillah, it’s just another milestone. These are things I don’t really focus on. Not having won as captain isn’t what bothers me. What hurts me the most is being part of a team that doesn’t win.

Hopefully, today’s victory is the start of many more wins to come. Regardless of whether I’m the captain or Richard is the captain, when we put on this jersey, the aim is to win, irrespective of who is leading the side. This win is just as important as the wins achieved under other captains. I’ve been part of those victories too. Winning is something we enjoy, and we take a lot of pride in it.

[On the recovery process] It’s tough. I think this is our first tour to the subcontinent in these kinds of weather conditions, and the weather has hit us hard. It’s going to come down to mental toughness and discipline from all of us. We’ll have to push each other and help our teammates do the right things because in the next 36 hours — not even 36 hours — we’ll be back here, trying to put everything on the line for our country."
Towhid Hridoy (Bangladesh captain): "(Where did they lose it?) I feel our bowlers bowled really well. It was a decent wicket to bat on. But our batters made mistakes. We started well, but then, we made mistakes.

(Was the target of 272 chaseable?) Of course, we could have chased it. As I mentioned, the bowlers bowled really well. Batters need to take responsibility.

(On the faulty DRS calls) Obviously, we will talk about it. But sometimes you have to listen to the keeper and the bowler.

(On the batting effort) Obviously disappointing. We made silly mistakes. We will come back from here.

(On captaining Bangladesh) It is a matter of pride for me as well as my family. Hopefully, I can do this for long."
Craig Ervine (POTM): "[What was most pleasing?] Obviously getting the win in the end. After putting all the work with the bat, to get the reward at the end, with the team getting over the line was very pleasing.

[On missing out on a 100 by 7 runs] Yeah, it is disappointing. To bat for that long, knowing that there are still 6-7 overs to go. You want to get to the 3-figure mark and then cash in at the backend. But unfortunately, it wasn't the case today.

[On almost scoring a 100 at the age of 41] At this age you take each game as it comes. It is nice to be in good form. Coming from the Australian series, scoring some runs there and then starting like I did today, I thought it was great and hopefully it can continue.

[On batting with Brendan Taylor] It is always special batting with Brendan; I think he has always had that calm air. The way he started his innings, he was really composed. Didn't get flattered too much with the strike rate. Obviously built up and then got momentum back on our side.

[Was it hard out there with the bat?] At the start, it swung around a little bit. There was a little bit of nip off the seam. Once that sort of stopped, we decided that it is the time to up the ante. I thought our partnership was really good, once the spin came on, we scored freely. Couple of times we got bogged down, however, with the experience and not panicking under pressure, continuing building a big partnership was the difference.

[Rest day tomorrow?] Definitely, feet up tomorrow."
