Interestingly, South Africa have repeated history once again! They lost the opening Test in both 2014 and 2018 before bouncing back to win the second Test against Australia in Gqeberha. The Proteas have followed the same script in this series, losing the first Test in Durban before producing a superb response to level the series here in Gqeberha. The stage is now set for a thrilling series decider in Cape Town, with the third and final Test getting underway on Tuesday, 27th October.
What a response from the Proteas! Australia’s miserable record at this venue continues, as South Africa produced a superb all-round effort to level the series. Despite having just four bowlers available in the second innings, the hosts delivered when it mattered most, showcasing tremendous discipline and resilience to secure a memorable victory.
Stat:This is the first time Australia have lost an international match after Travis Head scored a century, across 21 such instances. The only other time Australia failed to win was in a drawn Test against India in Brisbane in 2024, when Head scored 152.
Temba Bavuma’s Record as a Captain in Tests:
Matches - 14 Won - 12* Lost - 1 Draws - 1 Win % - 85.71
Stat: Gqeberha is only the second Test venue outside England where Australia have suffered five defeats, joining Karachi (5). Australia have not won a Test at Gqeberha since 1997.

Temba Bavuma (South Africa Captain & POTM): "(How is the heart rate?) Yeah, heart rate is quite good. Yeah, no, everything's good.
(Bit of drama today, wasn't it?) Yeah, it was. Obviously, the weather wanted to play a part in the day. We were a bit scrambling in the change room, not too sure about the weather, but yeah, we were very excited as soon as we got on. They made us work hard for those six wickets, but obviously, we are very happy at the end now.
(On his career best 179) Yeah, like I said, that innings is definitely right at the top as one of my best knocks. I think we saw throughout the day that batting was quite difficult, especially against the new ball. So, I think to be able to perform, to be able to get the team in a very competitive position, I take a lot of pride in that. And also having a serious chance in the series as well. So, I think, I can speak regarding a lot of things but that innings has given me a lot of confidence. A part of me is still in the moment. We still have a job and we have another match still to go. So, once that is gone, I will kind of give myself some time to soak those moments.
(On having multiple players standing up for the side) Well, it makes the job a lot easier. I think, I mean, a guy like KG, who brings in so much value to the side. It kind of allows the other guys to do their natural thing as well. Someone like Marco Jansen, who was outstanding in the first innings. He bowled well in the second innings as well. So, he is a massive value for us. It's been a while since he (Rabada) was on the field; he'll have the cobwebs. He would have dusted those off, but due to the guy's class, he is still able to get four wickets in the second innings. Hopefully that continues to get better and better.
(On trying not to get ahead of themselves, especially today despite picking up wickets) I think it's just basics. You just have to try and stay in the moment. I think when we were batting, all I was thinking is how to bat for an hour and then it becomes about batting for a session, how we can make sure we can keep them on their feet because we know how that does have an effect. And then, once the opportunities come which we have been calling since a while now. We need to be ruthless and taking the stand. That's exactly what we did in the second innings. Our team loves to play good old Test cricket.
(Will Anrich Nortje be available for the 3rd Test?) Well, I mean, that's a big loss for us. We know what an extra dimension he adds to our bowling line-up. I think that one we do need to take it upon ourselves. We took a risk by allowing Anrich to play two games in a row. So, that's just for us to take on. In terms of who might come in, we just have to go to Cape Town and then see. You have got guys like Gerald (Coetzee) on the wings. Patto (Dane Paterson) and Bosch as well. So, the options are there. There's Senuran Muthusamy as well. But, yeah, the options are there. Whoever we decide after we're there in Cape Town, we'll be confident that they form part of our best XI for those conditions."
