Do join us for it. For now, this is the troika of Darpan Tikiya, Akshay Bhide and Bishal Mandal saying goodbye. Sayonara!
With this resounding win, Nepal have almost guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals. All they have to do is ensure that there is no big slip-up against Japan in their remaining fixture of the preliminary round. That game will be played tomorrow. Our coverage of it will begin at 4:30 AM IST, 8:00 AM local time.
1:30 PM IST, 5:00 PM local time: Nepal beat Afghanistan by 5 wickets. Going by the scenes that are unfolding in the stands at the Korogi Sports Park, you'd be forgiven to think that you're in Kathmandu or Pokhara and not in Nogaya. Also, how fitting it is that the winning run was a quick single — after all, Nepal's enthralling hustle between the sticks is what was the hallmark of this run chase.
Though, one must state that it were their bowlers who set it up for them. Lalit Rajbanshi was handed the new ball and it did not take him long to work his magic. He was 'spot-on' with his lines and lengths in the powerplay, mixed the straight one with the one that generated turn and bounce, and the batters struggled to get him away. Perhaps, Afghanistan should have looked to play his deliveries on merit, rather than looking to whack everything. But all that if easier to say with the benefit of hindsight.
He picked 3/6 in the 3 overs bowled in the powerplay and then, returned to deliver the final over of the innings and cap off with 3/14. In between, Kushal Bhurtel and others held the forte. Bhurtel finished with even better figures of 4/21. If not for two scrappy knocks of 30 each — from Faisal Shinozada and Najibullah Zadran — Afghanistan might not have even reached 100.
Chasing 103, Nepal's start was not great either. They lost Bhurtel before a run was scored. Then, a couple of needless runouts pegged them back further. But eventually, a sensible partnership between Rohit Paudel and Dipendra Singh Airee steered the ship away from the rocks. Before that, Sundeep Jora had done well to score 34 but had gotten run out.
Surprisingly, Afghanistan bowled a lot more of seam than spin, which on this wicket was not ideal. Plus, some misfielding when the Nepalese batters put their men on pressure added to the woes.
1 Fuller delivery on leg, Jha pushes it to mid on and scampers across for a quick run. Nepal beat Afghanistan by five wickets and start their campaign on a winning note.
