Afghanistan register a big win over hosts Japan and start their campaign on a winning note. Japan were completely outplayed today and will have to get back to the drawing board quickly before their next game.
8:40 AM IST, 12:10 PM Local Time: There you go. Afghanistan start their campaign in the Asian Games 2026 Men’s Cricket Competition with a win. They beat hosts Japan comprehensively by 48 runs. The Japanese side did well with the ball but failed to back it up with bat in hand and suffer a heavy loss in the opening game.
Chasing 130 on a tricky surface, Japan lost Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake on a three-ball duck in the very first over. Skipper Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming got a start but failed to carry on, falling on 14 in the final over of the powerplay. The Afghans bowled very well and the hosts succumbed under pressure.
Benjamin Ito-Davis (17) and Alexander Shirai-Patmore (2) failed to get going before Arab Gul Momand ran through the Japanese lower order. Reo Sakurano-Thomas emerged as the top-scorer for Japan with 23 as regular wickets meant that they got bundled out on 81 in 19.3 overs to lose the game by 48 runs.
Arab Gul Momand bowled beautifully for Afghanistan and registered outstanding figures of 4/8 from his four overs, which included two maidens. Nangeyalia Kharote (3/19) grabbed three scalps whereas Abdullah Ahmadzai (2/13) grabbed two as they completed a fine bowling performance to outclass the home side.
Earlier, the Japanese bowlers bowled with great discipline upfront and didn’t allow the Afghan batters to get away. Hassan Eisakhil was dismissed inside the powerplay on three. Mohammad Akram Zazai (34) and Karim Janat (21) resurrected the innings before both fell in a quick succession.
Skipper Darwish Rasooli looked good at the crease. He received good support from Mohammad Ishaq after Najibullah Zadran fell cheaply on seven. The quickfire 44-run stand between Rasooli (29) and Ishaq (25*) helped Afghanistan get to 129/6 at the end of their 20 overs.
Shoma Slater (2/18) and Ibrahim Takahashi (2/19) picked up two wickets each for Japan whereas Reo Sakurano-Thomas (1/6) and Benjamin Ito-Davis (1/23) grabbed one each. The batters then faltered in the chase and fell short by 48 runs.
