More action coming our way from the Asian Games tomorrow. The 3rd quarterfinal between Sri Lanka and Nepal will take place at 5:30 AM IST, (9 AM Local Time). That will be followed by the 4th quarterfinal between Bangladesh and Malaysia at 10 AM IST (1:30 PM Local Time). Do join us for both on time as we hope for some better weather and exciting cricket.
Now what does this result mean? Owing to a higher seeding due to the rankings, India have made it through to the semifinals. They will face the winner of the 3rd quarterfinal between Sri Lanka and Nepal.
For Afghanistan, unfortunately the tournament comes to an end here. They were poor in the group stages and lost an important match to Nepal. Had they won it, they would have not been drawn against India in the QFs.
Ravi Bishnoi: "How has your experience been in Japan so far?) It has been good. We haven’t come here before, so it’s been a good experience so far. Hopefully, in the upcoming games, we get the opportunity to play some good cricket and show our game to the people here in Japan.
(On his first experience of commuting on the bullet train) It was 100% very fast. It was a great experience. We covered 400 kilometres in one hour and 13 minutes, so what could be better than that? You get to travel so quickly.
(On staying with other athletes in the game village and its experience and preparation) Absolutely. I had a similar experience last time in China, in Hangzhou, where we played. The Asian Games are definitely a different experience from the other series and World Cups. You get to see different sports and experience them as well. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to do that so far because we're staying a little away from the village. But we’ll try today, as we have tomorrow off, and explore some other sports as well.
(Are you sharing a room in the game village, or do you have a single room?) No, everyone has a single room.
(On the difference between winning a medal and winning a trophy?) Both mean the same thing: representing India. Whether you’re winning a trophy or a medal, it means the same. But here, you’re not representing the BCCI; you’re representing India. So it feels different to stand on the podium. You don’t get many opportunities to stand on a podium, and here you get to do that with a medal around your neck. It’s a great feeling.
(On the pitch) It looks like it could be a difficult wicket, but whatever we get, it should be a fair game for both teams."
9:44 AM IST, 1:04 PM Local Time: Match Abandoned! Yes, folks! The stubborn ground simply refused to dry up quickly despite the skies clearing up to quite an extent. We couldn't even have the toss done. The umpires could not even enforce the decision to take the covers off the square. They simply waited and then went up to the two captains. A small chat between them was followed by both teams making it official with handshakes.
9:30 AM IST, 1 PM Local Time: Toss is officially delayed as the covers are still placed. FYI, both teams have arrived at the ground, and some players are on the field, but nothing is happening. The waiting game continues...
The weather remains the biggest concern. Heavy rain is expected in Nisshin, and the first quarter-final's abandonment has increased fears that this match could also be washed out. If there is no result, India will advance to the semi-finals because of their higher seeding in the tournament, leaving Afghanistan eliminated without a chance to challenge the defending champions on the field. India are chasing another gold medal, Afghanistan are hoping to make history, but first, everyone at Korogi Sports Park will be watching the skies.
For now, there is good news as the skies are clear in Nisshin but toss is likely to be delayed due to the wet outfield.
There has already been a significant development in the day's first quarter-final. Pakistan have qualified for the semi-finals after their match against Hong Kong was abandoned due to inclement weather, with not a single ball bowled. Hong Kong have been eliminated without getting an opportunity to feature on the field, while Pakistan progress on the basis of their higher seeding. Pakistan will now face the winner of the fourth quarter-final between Bangladesh and Malaysia in Semi-Final 1 on October 1, with a place in the gold-medal match up for grabs. Pakistan would undoubtedly have preferred some game time ahead of the knockout stage, but the weather had other plans. Could the same scenario unfold in the India-Afghanistan contest?
9 AM IST, 12:30 PM Local Time: The Men's Asian Games competition has already been hit by the weather, and India and Afghanistan could be facing a frustrating wait in Nisshin. Hello and welcome to the second quarter-final at Korogi Sports Park, with Shreyas Iyer's India looking to continue their gold-medal defence against a young Afghan side. India survived a scare against Japan in a rain-shortened five-over contest before the Asian Games, while Afghanistan reached the quarter-finals after beating Japan but losing to Nepal. With a semi-final place at stake, the conditions could end up deciding the contest before the teams get a chance to compete.
I'm Dev Rajawat, getting things started here, and I'll soon have the pleasure of being joined by my co-commentators, Darpan Tikiya, Manan Mehta, scorer Bishal Mandal, and statistician Aman, as we prepare to bring you every moment of the live ball-by-ball action for this match.
