Milestone
After a wait of more than four hours, we finally got some action in this first ODI between India and Afghanistan in Dharamsala. The rain threatened a washout in the series opener, but once the skies cleared, the game started without much delay, thanks to the outfield, a good drainage system and hard-working groundsmen. Half of the overs were reduced from each innings. Indian bowlers were too hot for the visitors to handle, barring Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored the fastest ODI century for Afghanistan.
Chasing 195, India were never behind in the contest. Barring the mix-up between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer throwing his wicket away, the Men in Blue were on point with their stroke play. Gill top-scored with a sublime 84, Ishan Kishan gave the momentum post Rohit's runout, before KL Rahul finished things off in a flurry.

Shubman Gill (POTM and India Captain): "[On switching modes from Test cricket to ODI cricket and to this 25-over per-side game] It was kind of a T20 game. The way we started, they pulled the game away from us. Gurbaz batted brilliantly; the way he got his century was brilliant. But I think the way we pulled back in the middle overs and the death overs was brilliant.
[What did he feel about the surface when India were bowling?] Honestly, I think it was a brilliant wicket to bat on. It was, as the match went on, even when we were bowling, there was a little bit of grip for the spinners. When they were bowling, the ball was coming on pretty nicely.
[On his one-handed catch in the slip cordon] No, I definitely caught the ball. Practising a lot, taking a lot of slip catches and even, you know, before the match, I was talking to our fielding coach (T Dilip) that I haven’t really taken like a really brilliant catch in my international career so far, one-handed and very happy to get that catch.
[On the mix-up with Rohit Sharma] He saw the replay; he said it's fine. Even in the last match that we played against Afghanistan, T20s, he got run out there as well.
[On the debutants] Very impressive, upfront, how Gurnoor bowled, brilliant pace and the way he was swinging the ball, the kind of length he bowled consistently and even Harsh as well, after I think in the first over, he went for 16-17 runs, and the way he pulled the game back, trusted himself and kept tossing the ball up. It was very impressive.
[What did he make up of the team's performance tonight?] I think the middle overs in one-day games is very crucial, if you can keep, as a bowling group, if we can keep building pressure in the middle overs and keep creating opportunities and same when we are batting, if we can keep rotating the strike, keep batting at a healthy run rate, 6-6.5, without losing too many wickets, then you can really set up the game in the death. So these are the key points that we discuss in team meetings: how can we keep creating opportunities in the middle overs as a bowling group, and when we are batting, how can we keep really pumping on the runs."

Hashmatullah Shahidi (Afghanistan Captain): "[Immediate thoughts after the game] Yeah, it was a tough game. I think back-to-back wickets were the reason. When Gurbaz was playing, I thought we would score around 220-230. It would have been a good target, but we gave back-to-back wickets. After that, we were short by almost 30 runs, I think.
[His thoughts after Gurbaz's wicket] In my mind, I was targeting the left-arm spinner (Harsh Dubey), because there was a short boundary on one side. Gurbaz played really well, but after that we made some mistakes, starting with me and then the other batters. That is why we were 30 runs short.
[Anything with the ball that Afghanistan could have done better?] The wicket was also a little bit flatter, to be honest. We weren't that disciplined with our bowling as well. Hopefully, we learn from this and come back stronger to the next match."
