6 teams have qualified for 2027 Asia Cup (Image Source: AFP)The Asia Cup 2027 will be held in the ODI format in Bangladesh, as the 50-over World Cup is scheduled for later in the same year in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.India are the defending Asia Cup champions and have won three of the last four editions of the tournament. They beat Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the final of last year’s 50-over edition in Colombo. To date, the Asia Cup has been played in the T20 format thrice - 2016, 2022, and 2025. All the other 14 editions of the tournament have been held in the ODI format.The 50-over continental event in Bangladesh in 2027 will comprise 6 teams, out of which one is set to be a non-Test-playing member of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) selected through qualifying events.Apart from the traditional continental heavyweights like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, associate nations like Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Nepal have also featured in the Asia Cup at some stage. Below is a list of all six teams that have qualified for the Asia Cup 2027.1) IndiaIndia has featured in 16 Asia Cups so far out of the 17 editions. Notably, the Men in Blue did not participate in the 1986 Asia Cup due to serious security concerns regarding the civil unrest in the host nation, Sri Lanka. The Government of India directed the BCCI not to send the national team.India, led by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, won the inaugural Asia Cup in 1984, a three-team affair that also involved Pakistan and Sri Lanka.Moreover, the Indian Cricket Team is the most successful side in the Asia Cup, securing the title 9 times in 17 editions.They won four of the first five editions of the Asian competition and are also the only team to win three successive Asia Cup titles, between 1988 and 1995.2) Sri LankaSri Lanka holds the record for the most Asia Cup appearances, having featured in all 17 editions so far.They are also the second-most successful team in the competition, having lifted the Asia Cup six times - 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014, and 2022 (T20I format).3) PakistanPakistan are third in the tally for the most Asia Cups, with two titles to their name. However, the 2023 edition was decided to be played in a hybrid model, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with all of India’s matches scheduled in Sri Lanka. This also marked a first in the tournament's history. India vs Pakistan games become the most anticipated fixtures in the Asian cricket calendar. However, they had never faced each other in an Asia Cup final in its 41-year history before the 2025 edition.4) BangladeshIndia’s withdrawal from the 1986 Asia Cup opened the door for Bangladesh, which was added to the competition despite not having played an ODI before.Bangladesh have finished as runners-up three times in 2012, 2016, and 2018.5) AfghanistanAfghanistan made its debut in the Asia Cup tournament during the 2014 edition in Bangladesh and secured a memorable win against the hosts.Over the last decade, their rapid ascent transformed them into a major force. They have certainly moved past traditional tier-two status to become a premier Asian team.Talking about Afghanistan’s history in the Asia Cup, they have so far featured in five editions, growing from an underdog into one of the continent’s top white-ball contenders.6) NepalNepal’s rise continues on the cricketing horizons in Asia, as the side secured a place in the next Asia Cup edition in Bangladesh.Led by Sandeep Lamichhane, they decimated regional rivals UAE in a one-sided final of the 2026 ACC Men’s Premier Cup.
