Nepal begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign on February 8 against England at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, immediately tested on one of cricket’s biggest stages. After a promising feature in the 2024 edition, Nepal arrive with renewed belief and growing confidence.

Now carrying higher expectations, the Rhinos face a demanding group but will get some relief from travel, with all four of their group games scheduled in Mumbai. With improved depth, valuable experience, and their trademark fearless approach, Nepal aim to prove their progress.

Nepal T20 World Cup 2026 group-stage fixtures:

  • February 8 – Nepal vs England in Mumbai
  • February 12 – Nepal vs Italy in Mumbai
  • February 15 – Nepal vs West Indies in Mumbai
  • February 17 – Nepal vs Scotland in Mumbai

Nepal squad for T20 World Cup 2026

Rohit Paudel (c), Dipendra Singh Airee, Sandeep Lamichhane, Kushal Bhurtel, Aasif Sheikh, Sundeep Jora, Aarif Sheikh, Basir Ahamad, Sompal Kami, Karan KC, Nandan Yadav, Gulshan Jha, Lalit Rajbanshi, Sher Malla, Lokesh Bam.

Strengths of Nepal

1. Positive batting approach as their biggest weapon

Batting has been Nepal’s biggest strength in this format and that can continue to be in 2026 T20 World Cup. Aggressive openers Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh set the tone, while captain Rohit Paudel anchors at No.3. The middle order packs serious firepower with Dipendra Singh Airee and Gulshan Jha, reflecting Nepal’s positive, fearless brand of cricket.

2. The Sandeep Lamicchane-led spin attack

Nepal’s biggest bowling strength lies in their spin attack, led by Sandeep Lamichhane. As a unit, Nepal average 15.27, concede just 6.32 an over, and strike every 14.4 balls since the 2024 T20 World Cup edition. For tournament success, spin remains their most potent weapon against any opposition in pressure situations globally.

3. All-round depth

Nepal’s all-round depth is another major strength, with Dipendra Singh Airee, Gulshan Jha and Aasif Sheikh forming a formidable cartel. Each can influence games with both bat and ball, offering balance, flexibility and match-winning options that allow Nepal to adapt swiftly to different conditions and pressure moments.

Weaknesses of Nepal

1. Death bowling concerns

While Nepal possess a quality pace attack capable of extracting movement with the new ball, death bowling remains a concern. Warm-up games exposed this weakness, with 13.5 runs per over conceded at the back end between 17-20 overs across two matches, an alarming trend on flat, high-scoring Indian pitches.

2. Struggles against left-arm spin

Nepal’s batting, otherwise their biggest weapon, has shown clear vulnerability against left-arm spin. In previous T20 World Cups, nine of their ten wickets against spin fell to left-armers, averaging just 5.33 and that continued as their scoring hasn't improved since then, hovering around 107 strike-rate, an area opponents will look to exploit again.

Opportunities

1. Unfinished business for Nepal

Nepal nearly stunned South Africa in last edition’s group stage, missing victory by just one run. This time they arrive with greater confidence and learning, featuring in back-to-back T20 World Cups, believing they can push established sides harder than ever before.

Placed in Group C with England and West Indies, Nepal will back their recent growth, winning 16 of their last 24 T20Is since the 2024 World Cup. If they nail key moments against one of the two full members and beat Scotland and Italy, a historic Super 8s spot is within reach.

2. Sandeep Lamichhane’s redemption arc

Sandeep Lamichhane has led Nepal’s charge to the T20 World Cup, emerging as their leading wicket-taker since 2024 edition with 29 wickets at an outstanding 10.31 average and 11.5 strike-rate.

Fresh from a dominant Nepal Premier League 2025 where he finished as the highest wicket-taker, Sandeep enters the 2026 T20 World Cup in peak form which presents a golden opportunity to remind everyone about his credentials as a game-changer, guiding Nepal to have a historic campaign.

Threats

1. High-scoring conditions at Wankhede

Nepal will play all their matches of 2026 T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where flat pitches often produce run-fests. Their relative inexperience with the ball on such surfaces could put a dent on their main weapon which is bowling. If their bowlers adapt quickly to these conditions, Nepal become genuine contenders to progress from the group stage.
