Team India maintained its clinical run in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by a comprehensive 61-run margin. Batting first, India posted a respectable 175-run total on a challenging Colombo pitch before restricting Pakistan to 114 with an extraordinary bowling display.

Ishan Kishan starred with the bat, scoring 77 runs, while the bowlers put up a commendable team effort to ensure a smooth victory for the Men in Blue.

Under Suryakumar Yadav's leadership, India thus confirmed their entry into the Super Eights. Pakistan, on the other hand, served a demotion, with the United States climbing to the second position based on a superior Net Run Rate.

With only two matches left and India becoming the first team from group A to enter the next round, Pakistan and the United States are battling for the remaining Super Eight slot. As a group-stage elimination threatens the Men in Green, here we analyse how they can qualify for the Super Eights in the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan's Super Eight qualification scenario in T20 World Cup after defeat vs India

Under the leadership of Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan had a stellar start to the T20 World Cup 2026, winning their first two matches. After defeating the Netherlands by a narrow three-wicket margin, the Men in Green comfortably swatted aside the United States by 32 runs.

However, a massive 61-run defeat to India reduced their NRR to -0.403. As a result, they were demoted to third place on the standings, with the United States getting promoted based on a NRR of +0.787.

Considering the United States have played all their matches, Pakistan must win their last group-stage encounter against Namibia to qualify for the Super Eight stage. If Namibia somehow force an upset, Pakistan will be eliminated, with the United States qualifying for the next round alongside India.

Can India help Pakistan avoid a group-stage exit?

Interestingly, the Netherlands have one win under their belt, occupying the fourth position on the group-A points table. If, in a highly unlikely scenario, the Dutch beat India's formidable team, there are chances that their NRR might surpass Pakistan's.

However, given that the Pakistan vs Namibia match will played prior to India's final group-stage match against the Netherlands, the Salman Ali Agha-led outfit would be desperate to seal a spot in the Super Eights by defeating their opponents.

If Pakistan win against Namibia, they will automatically qualify for the next round, and the outcome of the India vs Netherlands clash won't affect them at all.

Pakistan given a reality check by arch-rivals

Although Pakistan's victories over the Dutch and United States showcased their T20 World Cup prowess, India gave them a reality check by winning the high-stakes encounter.

Plenty of loopholes in the Pakistani batting unit were exposed by the Indian bowlers, while the likes of Shaheen Afridi, Babar Azam and Shadab Khan crumbled under immense pressure. Therefore, Salman Ali Agha would be keen to motivate his troops and bring the best out of them as another defeat will mark Pakistan's shambolic exit from the competition.
