England have been a land of world-beating all-rounders, starting from Wilfred Rhodes to Tony Greig to Andrew Flintoff, but then there were two cricketers, Sir Ian Botham and Ben Stokes, who were in the league of their own.

Sir Ian Botham, also known as Beefy, was part of the "Golden Quartet" of all-rounders who dominated international cricket in the 1980s. Meanwhile, Stokesy was popularly called the Miracle Man for turning the tide around when all odds were against him.

In recent times, the two extraordinary all-rounders have been pitted against each other because of their polar-opposite views. It all began when the yesteryear star criticised the recently retired cricketer during England’s run in the Ashes 2025/26 Down Under.

After Stokes’ sudden retirement, Botham took another dig at the modern-day great. Then, during the IND vs ENG 1st ODI, he mocked him by stating “As we know Michael Vaughan & I. We don’t know what we’re talking about. Couple of old has -beens. Ben, if you’re listening congratulations you’ve joined the club. You’re now a has-been.”

To his predecessor’s comments, Stokes replied by saying, “The quote 'It's better to be a has-been than a never-been' originates from Lord Ian Botham.”

This back-and-forth divided the England fans and cricket fanatics across the globe into two halves. To put the argument to an end once and for all, in this article, we will analyse who was a better all-rounder among the two England greats, Ben Stokes and Ian Botham.

However, the yesteryear icon was a far better bowler, both statistically and skillfully. Beefy was a more complete bowler, while Stokesy was rather a workhorse who delivered when nothing was going England’s way. So far, the scoreline sits at 1-1 in the Ben Stokes vs Ian Botham debate.

The Ashes is regarded as the ultimate battle for England cricketers, as careers have been made and ended after a single series against the mighty Australians.

Interestingly, both Botham and Ben Stokes have identical numbers with the bat in the Ashes. If Stokesy had the moment of his life during the Headingley Test in 2019, then Beefy played one such moment at Headingley, better called the 1981 Masterpiece. Both all-rounders won England the Test from unthinkable situations, where the chips were undoubtedly down.

Meanwhile, Botham, with the ball, was on a different level in Test matches vs Australia, scalping 148 at 27.65 apiece. Stokes, on the contrary, had one-third of the wickets (56) compared to the legendary all-rounder's 148 scalps.

Now, the scoreline is 2-1 in favour of Ian Botham.

Stokes and Botham played almost the same number of ODI matches for England. In the 50-over format, the modern-day great scored 1350 runs more than his counterpart. Additionally, he had also racked up five centuries in comparison to Botham's zilch.

On the other hand, Botham, again, had double the wickets as Stokes in ODIs as well.

What goes in Stokes' favour is that he was the linchpin of England's first-ever ODI World Cup-winning team in 2019, while Botham could only finish as runners-up with England in the 1992 marquee event.

The scoreline after comparing them in ODIs stands at three each.

Conclusion

After comparing Ian Botham and Ben Stokes on stats, we have come down to the verdict that both the all-rounders were equally brilliant and the mainstays of the English teams of their respective generations. As per our rating, the Ben Stokes vs Ian Botham scoreline stands at 3-3.
