After the end of the T20 leg, the first unofficial ODI of the five-match series between Pakistan Shaheens and England Lions is set to take place in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
In the three-match unofficial T20I series, England Lions whitewashed the Pakistanis and won it 3-0. However, the final game went down to the wire before the English registered a two-wicket victory in the final over. Skipper Jordan Cox scored a magnificent 75 off 37 to help his side chase down a target of 163 runs. Credit should be given to pacer Scott Currie as well, who took 3/27 in the first innings. For Pakistan A, Maaz Sadaqat displayed an all-round performance by scoring a half-century and taking two wickets.
Cox was the leading run getter of the series with 111 runs from three innings. James Coles was the leading wicket-taker with 8 scalps. Sadaqat was his team's leading run scorer with 102 runs while leggie Saad Masood was Shaheens' leading wicket-taker with 5 scalps.
For Pakistan Shaheens, the series offers an opportunity for fringe players to push their case for national selection. With several performers from domestic cricket in the squad, the focus will be on building partnerships and adapting to pressure situations against quality opposition.
The bowling unit, traditionally Pakistan’s strength, will look to make early inroads with the new ball. The pace attack is expected to test England’s batters with movement and disciplined lengths, while the spinners could play a vital role in controlling the middle overs.
England Lions, meanwhile, arrive on the back of a 3-0 T20 series victory and with a reputation for fearless cricket. Their batting line-up is likely to adopt a proactive approach, particularly in the powerplay. The Lions have built a strong pathway system, and this series is another chance for young players to gain valuable subcontinental experience.
Both sides last met in the format during a five-match unofficial ODI series back in December 2018. Back then, it was the Pakistanis who clinched that series 3-2.
With pride and progression on the line, the first unofficial ODI is set to be a competitive affair. Who will win this game? Join us at 10:30 AM IST (9 AM Local Time) on Friday for the live coverage.
