Emerging stars from England and Pakistan will take centre stage when the England Lions face Pakistan Shaheens in the opening unofficial T20 of their three-match series at Abu Dhabi's Zayed Cricket Stadium on Friday.

England’s second-string side will be led by promising batter Jordan Cox, backed by a balanced unit that combines batting depth with varied bowling options. Cox has already made his white-ball cricket debut in international cricket and has played in various T20 leagues across the world.

The side also features Jersey's international batter Asa Tribe, along with Tom Moores, who has heavy first-class and T20 franchise cricket experience. The team also features all-rounder James Coles, who was part of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape squad that lifted this year's SA20 trophy.

Pakistan Shaheens, captained by Sameer Minhas, arrive with an exciting blend of talent. Minhas also captained Pakistan in the recently-concluded U19 World Cup and was the side's leading run scorer. The side also features 20-year-old batting all-rounder Maaz Sadaqat, who has played in multiple franchise leagues at such a young age. Spinner Sufiyan Muqeem, who has already made his white-ball debut for Pakistan, is also in the squad.

The presence of former Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed as a mentor within the Shaheens setup adds tactical nuance as they look to translate their youth achievements into strong performances in this T20 series. Notably, Pakistan Shaheens lifted the Asia Cup Rising Stars title in November 2025.

Both sides last met in December 2018 in a two-match T20 series in UAE. The English side whitewashed the Pakistanis by 2-0.

Key battles are expected in the early exchanges between top-order batters and incisive bowling units, while spin and death-over skills could prove decisive on a typically slow but competitive Abu Dhabi track.

Beyond immediate results, the series offers a platform for these emerging cricketers to stake their claim for future international honours.
