After the first WODI of the series, held two days ago, the West Indies Women and Sri Lanka Women will face off again this Sunday in the 2nd WODI at St George's, Grenada.
Sri Lanka’s comprehensive performance in the opener showcased their batting depth and bowling discipline. Posting a competitive total of 240/6, they set up the contest with strong top-order contributions that laid a solid platform. Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama scored a 60-odd each. The duo also stitched a partnership of 86 runs for the second wicket. Playing in her 100th WODI, West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews, along with her fellow offie, Karishma Ramharack, took two wickets apiece.
In reply, West Indies Women struggled and lost wickets at regular intervals. However, veteran batter Stafanie Taylor and youngster Jannillea Glasgow scored a half-century each. It was Taylor's 42nd career half-century in WODI cricket. The duo stitched a stand of 89 runs for the sixth wicket.
Lankan spinners backed it up with smart line and length, regularly breaking partnerships and keeping West Indies under pressure throughout the chase. Inoka Ranaweera and Kavisha Dilhari took four and three wickets respectively.
West Indies needed 12 runs from the final over but they failed to cross the line and lost the game by 10 runs.
For West Indies Women, Sunday’s match represents a crucial opportunity to level the series and regain confidence. They will be looking to address the batting lapses that saw them struggle to build sustained partnerships in the first outing.
With experienced batters in their ranks, a more assertive start will be key — particularly during the powerplay overs — to prevent Sri Lanka from dominating early. Players such as Stafanie Taylor and Hayley Matthews will be central to West Indies’ plans: with their ability to anchor innings and accelerate when needed, they can provide the backbone for a more successful chase.
Sri Lanka Women, on the other hand, will be buoyed by their first-game performance and look to carry that momentum forward. Their batting unit has shown it can grind out runs and build partnerships, and their bowling attack will aim to apply consistent pressure through the middle overs.
Conditions at the venue are expected to favour batters, but it will start aiding the spinners as the game progresses. With the series currently at 1-0 in Sri Lanka’s favour, West Indies must produce a composed batting display and tighten up their bowling plans to keep the series alive.
