End of a long double header day here in Goa. It has been a superb tournament so far and the competitiveness is very much there. The Rajasthan Royals are climbing up the ladder and the Pune Panther are stumbling in these early stages.
We have another double header day lined up tomorrow! At 2:30 PM IST the Gurugram Thunders will take on the Rajasthan Lions. At 7:30 PM IST, the Dubai Royals will go head on against the Pune Panthers.
On this note, I, Manan Mehta would like to take your leave on behalf of my colleagues Utsav and Zeeshan Naiyer. B-byeeee!!!
Eoin Morgan (Rajasthan Lions):"Yeah, delighted! One of the bowling performances of the tournament so far. If you play a power-packed lineup, the game is usually just in the thereabouts but the bowling attack, made it simpler.
(On toss decision) I think both of us got it wrong. We held their catches very well and fielding might have been the point of difference. This result has bolstered our NRR further. So, tomorrow we have to come out in the heat and try to continue the winning run.
(On Naman's performance) Naman has been brilliant. We have played together before in Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has been hitting from the middle of the bat. If he keeps doing this, then it will get us a long way.
(On too many SRH players in the Lions' squad) Yes, we are a quiet a few from that SRH squad. 2016 we played the finals and the hand that Ben Cutting played in Bangalore was really special."
JP Duminy (Player of the Match): "Challenging in the sense that the wicket was low and slow. I thought that I won't bowl tonight but worked out in the end nicely.
Yeah it was an interesting one. It was important to break that partnership between Pollard and Tharanga. It was good that we kept breaking partnerships. I luckily got two in my over.
There wasn't much spin but the ball didn't bounce that regularly. I have played against Mishra. Played with him. It always helps when you play with someone. It is a good match up but again he really did not give anything in my radar."
Legend of the match: JP Duminy
Time for post match presentation.
Shane Watson (Pune Panthers Captain): "Its great to have Pollard. He batted very very nicely. He is going to be a huge addition for us. Upul too batted brilliantly. A little more contribution was needed from the top order and the middle order.
We were definitely 20-30 runs short. But when you have a bowler like Amit Mishra, you are always in the game. We had the bowling to defend it but unfortunately we needed a lot more runs."
10:30 PM IST, Local Time: Rajasthan Lions win by 6 wickets! That is a serious drubbing from the Rajasthan Lions! They have won two on the trot now and they were superior with bat and ball. The Pune Panthers were off colour once again and they need a win desperately and pretty soon.
The Pune Panthers won the toss and elected to bat first. They were rocked early by some good spin bowling from the Lions. They were reduced to 30/3 inside 4 overs. That is when they got to spin hitters out there in the middle.
Kieron Pollard and Upul Tharanga fought back against the spinners and nailed some big hits. Pollard was the aggressor in that and smoked some really long sixes. They took the score to 117/3. 87 runs stand and that is when Pollard was dismissed for 48 after mistiming one. Tharanga got dismissed for 49 very soon.
The Panthers slipped big time once the set batters got out. From 117/3 they got all out for just 144. The spinners from the Lions' side were immaculate with their lines, lengths and pace as they ran through the middle and lower order. The pick of the bowlers for the Lions were Shadab Jakati (3-13) and Jess Karia (2-28).
The chase started on a good note for the Lions. The intentions looked clear that they wanted to get the runs in quick time. They did lose Eoin Morgan and Callum Ferguson early but Naman Ojha and Suresh Raina made sure that the powerplay was won by them. They raced to 58/2 in the first 6 and killed most of the chase right there.
Raina soon got dismissed after the powerplay. Naman Ojha and JP Duminy carried on from there. Ojha brought up his 50 in just 27 balls. His innings filled with great intent killed the chase entirely. He was dismissed soon after his fifty but all he left out there was formality for the remaining batters. JP Duminy and Ben Cutting finished the chase with some big blows and made sure there were no hiccups. Duminy was 37* and Ben Cutting was 22* at the end. The pick of the bowlers for the Panthers was Ankit Rajpoot for his 1-24.
