A one-sided affair in Sylhet as Rangpur Riders kick off their BPL 2025–26 campaign with a convincing win. Having fallen short in the Qualifier last season, they will be keen to go the distance this time around. It was a clinical performance, with the Riders chasing down the target with five overs to spare.
For now, that’s all we have from the BPL. There’s plenty of cricket happening around the world, so switch tabs to follow all the live action. It’s a double-header day in the BPL once again, with Rajshahi Warriors set to square off against Noakhali Express later in the evening. This is Ajay Pal Singh signing off on behalf of my colleagues Dev Rajawat, Zeeshan Naiyer and Aman. Goodbye, and keep following us.
Nurul Hasan (Rangpur Riders Captain): “I'm very happy. First of all, Alhamdulillah, I think it’s a really good start for us. Yes, it’s just the beginning, but starting on a positive note always helps.
We have a good problem to deal with - we’ve got plenty of options. At the same time, it comes down to decision-making and using those options at the right time. That’s a challenge for me as a captain, but it’s a good challenge to have. Overall, I feel everyone in the squad is capable, and we have a well-balanced team.
That said, this is only our first game. We know the tournament is long, and consistency will be key going forward. Today’s performance helps us set our standards, but there are still a few gaps we need to address. We’ll sit down, discuss those areas, and Inshallah, we’ll come back even stronger in the next games.”
Faheem Ashraf (POTM): "Yeah, we had a simple plan. Just wanted to assess the conditions and bowl accordingly.
While bowling, I have a simple plan. I do, what I have. I did that today. Yeah, it is good for us. We have lots of experienced guys like Mahmudullah and Malan and plenty more."
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: FAHEEM ASHRAF
Time for the Post-Match Presentations...
Mahedi Hasan (Chattogram Royals Captain): “I think we lost the match mainly in the middle overs. We couldn’t build partnerships in the middle order, and that really hurt our total. We kept losing wickets at crucial moments, which meant we were always playing catch-up with the score.
I feel we were probably 40 to 50 runs short. On a day game like this, 150 to 160 would have been a competitive total. The wicket does get a little tricky later on - it grips slightly, and the ball comes onto the bat differently.
With the quality of spinners and bowlers we have, that kind of score could have given us a real chance. As for the bowling changes in the middle overs, it was largely about match-ups. There were quite a few left-handed batters at the crease, so we decided to try our part-time off-spinners like Mahmudul Joy and Baig.
At that stage, when batters like Litton and Malan were already batting very well, I wanted to experiment a bit and see if we could create an opening. We’ll go back, look at what we can improve, and come back stronger in the next game.”
3:24 PM IST, 3:54 PM Local Time: A comprehensive start to the campaign for Rangpur Riders as they brush aside Chattogram Royals by 7 wickets in a one-sided affair. The bowlers set it up for the Riders and a 91-run opening stand between Litton Das and Dawid Malan did the job for the Riders.
Earlier in the game, Nurul Hasan won the toss and opted to bowl first. Faheem Ashraf picked up a five-wicket haul and was the star of the show. Mustafizur Rahman bagged two, while spinners Sufiyan Muqeem and Aliss Islam were good as well, taking one wicket apiece. Nahid Rana was rapid and got a wicket as well.
Mohammad Naim (39 off 20) gave them a good start but it fell apart soon for the Royals. Mirza Tahir Baig (20) and Abu Hider (13) were the only other batters who got into double figures in a dismal batting show in Sylhet.
In reply, Litton Das and Dawid Malan took the game away for the opposition with a clinical 91-run opening partnership.
Litton fell three runs short of his half-century. He fell for 47 and was dismissed by Mukidul Islam. Towhid Hridoy fell for one; he too was dismissed by Mukidul in the same over.
Mahmudul Hasan Joy bagged a late wicket of Dawid Malan after the former England international scored a solid half-century. Khushdil Shah finished the chase with a six to seal two points for Rangur.
