That's it from our live coverage of the opening day of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025-26. The Chattogram Royals start the season with a big 65-run win over the Noakhali Express. This is Mohammad Anab signing off on behalf of my colleagues Arjun Bhalla and Raju Khariya. Cheers!
Mahedi Hasan (Chattogram Royals Captain): "Nice to register a win right at the start of the tournament. I told the guys before the second innings that a total of around 180 is a good total because we have a good bowling side. I am a learner and still learning. We have some senior pros and they guide our young players very well."
Mirza Tahir Baig (POTM): "Thanks to almighty God that we won the match. It's good that I scored well and the team won in my first BPL match. The plan in the middle was simple. The team allowed me to express myself and play freely. It was a tricky wicket. The ball was not coming onto the bat very well. Looking forward to the next game now."
Player of the Match: Mirza Tahir Baig
Shykat Ali (Noakhali Express Captain): "Bowlers gave around 15-20 runs more in the first innings but they did a decent job. The batters played a lot of bad shots and should have been more responsible. Hopefully, they will improve themselves before the next game. It was a chaseable score if the batters had done a good job. It's only our first match and nine matches are still left. Hopefully, we will come back strongly in the next match."
10:59 PM IST, 11:29 PM Local Time: That's it for Noakhali Express. They have lost their first-ever game in BPL by a hefty margin of 65 runs. Chasing 175 runs on a track which had no demons in it and where dew started pouring down in the first innings itself, should have been a small task for any side. But Noakhali Express made a mockery of themselves.
As Noakhali were one batter short, the top order tried to bat with a positive intent from the word go, but they failed to calculate their chances. Habibur Rahman slammed three boundaries in his first five balls, but went packing two balls later against Shoriful Islam.
The duo of Mahedi Hasan and Tanvir Islam took over from there. The spinners had the next two wickets inside the power play in subsequent overs. Jaker Ali, who was one of the most experienced batters in the lineup, crumbled under pressure as they departed off Mahedi.
Noakhali's foreign imports, Maaz Sadaqat and Haider Ali, tried to show mettle but could only put on a 32-run stand. The opener fell against Abu Hider on 38, while Haider was trapped by Tanvir after hitting the left-arm spinner for two biggies. Tanvir then had one more wicket on the next ball.
He was denied a hat-trick, but returned with three wickets. Meanwhile, two wickets each were taken by Shoriful, Mahedi, and Makidul Islam. Abu Hider, however, could scalp just one wicket.
Earlier in the day, the Chattogram Royals had a shaky time with the bat, but Mirza Tahir Baig dropped the anchor from one end. The opener carried throughout the innings from one side, scoring 80 runs off 69 balls. He ensured the Royals post 174/6. Later, the bowlers defended it like a force.
