The fourth season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is entering its final stages. With just one league-stage fixture remaining, three of the five teams are still in contention for a place in the playoffs. In the final league game, Delhi CapitalsWomen will square off against UP Warriorz Women at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on Sunday (February 1).
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already sealed a direct entry into the final, finishing on top of the table with 12 points from eight games. Gujarat Giants have secured a spot in the Eliminator after ending the league stage with 10 points from eight matches.
The race for the final playoff berth remains wide open. Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals are level on six points, but the Capitals have a game in hand and a win will see them qualify. UP Warriorz are also in the mix — a victory in their final game will bring them level on points with MI and DC, though they will need a big win to surpass Mumbai’s net run rate.
Delhi Capitals began their campaign with a couple of defeats, with their first win coming against UP Warriorz. They will be hoping to complete a double over them and book a place in the playoffs for the fourth season in a row.
In each of the previous three seasons, the Capitals have made a direct entry into the final by topping the table in the group stage. However, they are still yet to get their hands on the silverware.
In their previous game, Delhi Capitals failed to close out a chase against Gujarat Giants. Bowling first, they conceded 174/9 in 20 overs. Sree Charani picked up four wickets for 31 runs from her four overs. Chinelle Henry claimed two wickets, while Marizanne Kapp and Minnu Mani chipped in with one apiece.
In reply, the Capitals lost both openers inside the powerplay. Shafali Verma scored 14 off 10 balls, while Lizelle Lee managed 11 off 20. Laura Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues added 31 runs for the third wicket, but the partnership progressed at almost a run-a-ball.
The Capitals were 82/2 after 10.5 overs, but a dramatic collapse followed. They lost three wickets in the space of 10 balls and managed to add just three runs to the total.
Niki Prasad and Sneh Rana gave them hope by stitching together a 70-run stand for the seventh wicket. They needed nine runs off the final over but couldn’t get over the line, falling short by three runs.
On the other hand, UP Warriorz are all but out of the playoff race. They need to beat Delhi Capitals by a margin of over 150 runs, and if they bat first and restrict DC to 64, they would need to chase the target down within 11 balls.
In their previous game, they batted first and the new opening pair of Meg Lanning and Deepti Sharma put on 74 runs. Lanning fell for 41, while Deepti scored 55 off 43 balls. The middle order then collapsed like ninepins.
They managed to get to 143 for 8 from their 20 overs. In reply, only Asha Sobhana and Shikha Pandey managed to get a wicket each but it was not enough as RCB got over the line in 13.1 overs.
