Right then, after RCB booked their ticket to the Grand Finale yesterday, it’s Gujarat Giants who have secured their place in the Eliminator tonight. The big question now is who they will come up against in that knockout clash.
Mumbai Indians will be glued to their television screens on Sunday, hoping UP Warriorz can defeat Delhi Capitals, but not by a big margin, so that MI’s net run rate stays intact. It’s a tense wait for Mumbai as the numbers could still play a part. For Delhi Capitals though, the equation is simple and straightforward — win the match and march into the playoffs.
For now, this is Pritam Dey signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Ninaad Dixit who, along with scorer/analyst Manish Bishnoi & statistician Aman brought all the updates of this clash. Stay tuned for more cricketing action from around the world. BYE BYE👋
Georgia Wareham (Player of the Match): "[on her allround performance] It was nice actually having an impact today with both bat and ball. Let myself down a little bit in both aspects of the game for first part of the season. Contributing to the win tonight, really happy.
[assessing the conditions while batting] As batters we give ourselves a few balls to get going, that's been the best way to go about it.
[assessing the conditions while bowling] Having a good idea of the what the conditions will do out there definitely helps batting first. We are very good batting first and defending with the ball. Having a pretty good idea by the time I get the ball and after the powerplay certainly helps but our plan doesn't change too much. We try and hit the stumps as much as we can and bring all dismissals in play."
Player of the Match: Georgia Wareham
Ashleigh Gardner (Gujarat Giants Women Captain): "Yeah, really happy with that performance. We knew that this was almost like a quarter-final for us. There was so many positives taking into this game. We knew that today was a new game. We did many things right but we just needed to do it for a longer period of time. Obviously really relieved to go through to the playoffs with this group.
(On opting to bat first) Umm, we have won all our games batting first. So, the decision was simple to bat first and then defend the score later on. We as a side like to go hard in the powerplay with the bat and then look for partnerships in that middle phase. If we can try utilize those players as best as we could then it will be great. I still think that we could've got a little bit more to our total. The bowlers did a fantastic job in taking wickets at regular intervals. Kaur dragged the game till the end. We knew that how damaging she can be but we are pleased to get the win.
I think both. There were a few variations with the ball. Bowlers took the pace off the ball. We decided to keep the stumps into play. There will be odd bounce as well. For us it was to have a simple gameplan and then execute them really well.
(On Georgia Wareham) We obviously know the world class player she is. We saw that in the Big Bash League. I have played a lot of cricket with her. Coming in the middle and then taking the game away from the opposition was brilliant from here. She is a world class leg spinner and she got us crucial breakthroughs as well. She did a brilliant job for us today."

Sophie Devine:[She wears the Purple Cap] "Look, I thought we probably just had enough runs on the board. The way Ash & Wareham batted their today was just fantastic. We stuck to our plans and also I felt that the way we fielded today was incredible. We were pretty good today as a unit.
Yeah, it was tough to score runs on this wicket. Early wickets in the powerplay always helps you to put pressure on the batting side. To get rid of players like Nat & Hayley was a big help for us. We were looking to get rid of Harman too because we know that if she gets going, any total is not big enough. Yeah, the first 10 overs was outstanding and then we held our nerves to get over the line which was nice.
(On opting to bat first after winning the toss) I am actually not sure what's the difference is for us whether we bat first or bowl first. We just had really good success batting first. The trend was some ridiculous, it was 40 tosses in a row where teams chose to bowl first. It was a wicket where we thought it was getting tired a bit so we backed ourselves to bat first. Ash is not good at winning tosses so we weren't hopeful. We were ready to get told to bat or bowl first.
(On playing the Eliminator) I think it's really important to take a couple of days rest. It's nice to hear that we don't play until Tuesday. We will rest and recover quickly. We will try to be fresh for the Eliminator clash. We will try to stay consistent leading up to each game. We will celebrate tonight and then slowly and steadily we will gear up for the Eliminator game on Tuesday."
Harmanpreet Kaur (Mumbai Indians Captain): "We were not able to execute our batting plan in the powerplay, lost some wickets as well. We didn't have any impactful partnerships.
I just told myself to keep batting and was looking for support at the other end. It happens under pressure. Your team is not able to execute your plans sometimes, it was a good game overall.
[on lapses in the 1st inns] While fielding we did misfield. We gave 16-17 runs away, that thing also cost us. We are a very good batting side. One good partnership with me would have changed things for our side but unfortunately we couldn't win this game.
[on thought process in the death overs] I was calculating how many sixes we need. We needed 7-8 sixes at that stage so I wanted to keep the strike but they executed their plans really well. I knew their plan but we should give credit to their bowling unit, they bowled really well.
[on tomorrow's fixture deciding their fate] I focus on things which are in my hand. If we qualify we will be happy. Today was something we wanted to focus on but unfortunately couldn't do what we wanted to do."
Head-to-Head in WPL History:
Total Matches: 9
Gujarat Giants won: 1
Mumbai Indians won: 8
10:51 PM IST & Local Time: That's it! The streak has finally been broken! Gujarat Giants have defeated Mumbai Indians for the first time in WPL history, marking a memorable night for the franchise. It’s not just a landmark victory but a result that also propels them into the playoffs. A composed all-round effort sees the Giants clinch the contest by 11 runs.
Earlier in the day, Gujarat Giants won the toss and opted to bat first in what was a crucial encounter. Their innings got off to a shaky start as Beth Mooney was dismissed inside the powerplay by Shabnim Ismail for 5. Sophie Devine and Anushka Sharma then came together and stitched a 48-run stand off 43 balls for the second wicket, steadying the innings well. Just when the Giants looked set to build on that partnership, both batters fell in back-to-back overs as Mumbai Indians pulled things back brilliantly.
From a precarious position of 70/3 in 10.1 overs, Georgia Wareham and Ash Gardner came together and rebuilt the innings before accelerating as the overs ticked by. The duo added a vital 71 runs off just 43 balls, shifting gears at the right time and taking the Giants past the 150-run mark. Ash Gardner played a fluent knock but was eventually dismissed for 46 off 28 balls by Amelia Kerr. Georgia Wareham held her nerve till the end, remaining unbeaten on a valuable 44 off 26 deliveries, as Gujarat Giants posted a strong total of 167/4 from their 20 overs.Amelia Kerr was the standout bowler for Mumbai Indians, finishing with impressive figures of 2/26.
In reply, Mumbai Indians got off to a cautious start at the top of the order. Openers Hayley Matthews and Sajeevan Sajana struggled to find momentum inside the powerplay, consuming far too many dot balls. Matthews was dismissed in the 5th over for 6 off 8 deliveries, and Sajana soon followed in the next over, departing for 26 off 25 balls. As a result, Mumbai Indians found themselves under pressure at 33/2 at the end of the powerplay.
Sophie Devine struck in the 7th over to remove Nat Sciver-Brunt, leaving Mumbai Indians in a spot of bother. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Amelia Kerr then tried to rebuild, adding 45 runs for the fourth wicket and keeping the chase alive. Just when the partnership was gaining momentum, Kerr was dismissed against the run of play for 20 by Georgia Wareham. The pressure continued to mount, and Gayakwad picked up another key wicket by removing Amanjot Kaur for 13 in the 17th over.
The entire responsibility rested on the shoulders of Mumbai Indians skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (82*), who was left fighting a lone battle with very little support from the other end. She batted right till the end and gave it her all, but the asking rate proved too steep in the closing stages. With 26 runs needed off the final over, Ash Gardner held her nerve and defended it successfully. Gujarat Giants eventually sealed the contest with an 11-run victory and booked their place in the playoffs. Stay tuned for the Post-Match Presentation!
