When was the last time Australia took the field in a World Cup game that was a dead rubber? It has been a forgettable campaign for the Aussies. Yes, they were a bit short in ammunition in the bowling attack, with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood missing the tournament due to injuries. But that is not an excuse by any means. Usually, any Australian team that takes the field is known for fierce competitiveness! It hasn't been the case this time around...

In the 40th and the last group game of the T20 World Cup 2026, Australia and Oman collide at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Friday (February 20).

The last time Australia were knocked out in the group stage was in the 2009 T20 World Cup. This time, they were placed in Group B and started with a big win against Ireland, but they unexpectedly lost to Zimbabwe before they were outplayed by Sri Lanka in a must-win game.

Australia saw what it feels like to be on the receiving end in front of a crazy Pallekele crowd when a certain Pathum Nissanka gets going. In a must-win game, the 2021 champions were bolstered by the arrival of their skipper, Mitchell Marsh, and he led from the front with a half-century and set a solid foundation with Travis Head, who also hit a fifty as the Australian openers added a century stand in eight odd overs, but they lost their way against spin. The middle and lower orders never really arrived, and the big guys failed when the Kangaroos needed them the most.

The bowling lacked penetrating ability. Even Adam Zampa was off colour when Australia needed him to do the job. They managed to pick up only 2 wickets in each of their last two games that they lost.

Matthew Renshaw was unfortunate miss out in the last game despite scoring a fighting half-century against the Chevrons. He should come back into the XI. Also, eyes will be on Steve Smith to see whether he gets a game, which he should get.

Oman, too, have been eliminated. They have lost all three matches. They will aim to end the tournament on a high note, but they are up against a bruised Australia.

Oman's bowling took a proper beating. The veteran Aamir Kaleem hit a fifty, and Hammad Mirza looked good with the bat. These have been a couple of positives for the Asian side.

Australia and Oman faced off at Kensington Oval in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and that was the one and only time these two teams have met in T20Is. Oman gave a bit of fight, but they were always going to come second in the race.

It is the last group game in this WC. Australia will come hard at Oman and play for their pride.

Can Oman give Australia a run for their money? To know, join us at 6 PM IST and Local Time on Friday for its live coverage!
