Afghanistan and Canada lock horns in a Group D fixture at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Thursday (February 19).
One of the semi-finalists of the 2024 T20 World Cup had to accept their fate of an early exit in this edition.
Both teams have already been knocked out, but will aim to finish their respective campaign on a high note.
After losing to New Zealand, the Rashid Khan-led side had the game against South Africa in control, before a dramatic last phase saw the game stretch as far as the second super over. Eventually, Afghanistan failed to hold their nerve, and with other results not matching their requirements, they had to settle for the early exit.
They opened their winning account in the previous game against the UAE. A brilliant all-round performance from Azmatullah Omarzai, quality spells from their experienced spinners and Ibrahim Zadran's welcome return to form ensured that Afghanistan didn't fall behind against the UAE, claiming a five-wicket win.
On the other hand, Canada are yet to win a game this WC. South Africa and the UAE hunted them with ease, as did the Kiwis. But the match against the Black Caps had plenty of positives to take for the North American side.
Named after Yuvraj Singh, the 19-year-old Canadian opener, Yuvraj Samra made history by not only becoming the youngest ever centurion in the T20 WCs, but also the batter with the highest individual score - 110 - for Associate teams in the competition. Due to his heroics, Canada got to a fighting score against New Zealand. Saad Bin Zafar and Dilon Heyliger gave early jitters for the Kiwis, but didn't have enough venom in the attack to defend 173 against a high-class New Zealand batting line-up.
It is also a special game for the former Canada skipper, Navneet Dhaliwal, who is going to retire from cricket after this game. The 37-year-old is the country's highest run-scorer in the T20Is, with 1305 runs.
