The outcome of Ireland vs Zimbabwe at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (February 17) not only keeps these two interested in it, but also their Group B counterpart, Australia.
Yes, you read that right. With a shocking loss to Zimbabwe and a proper hammering against Sri Lanka, the Aussies are on the brink of elimination or, as Mitchell Marsh said at the post-match presentation, they are in the lap of the gods.
The equation is simple for Zimbabwe. They need to win one of their remaining two games against Ireland and Sri Lanka to qualify for the Super 8s. Even a rain washout in either of the two games will do the job. That will also be the end of the road for Australia as well as Ireland.
For the Irish side, things aren't straightforward, but the best they can do is to win this match and then hope for other results to go their way.
After getting beaten by Sri Lanka and Australia, Ireland did really well to come out on top against Oman. Despite Paul Stirling's absence due to an injury, they managed to bounce back with a thumping 96-run win to open their winning account in this WC.
Stand-in skipper Lorcan Tucker led from the front and remained unbeaten on 94 off 51 balls, and received superb support from Gareth Delany, who also scored a fifty. George Dockrell's unreal 9-ball 35* then took the total to 235/5, which was always beyond Oman's reach. Josh Little, Barry McCarthy, Matthew Humphreys and Dockrell did the rest with the ball to decimate and knock out Oman.
Zimbabwe began with a huge eight-wicket win over Oman, but it's their impressive 23-run win over Australia that has turned the tables around.
There wasn't a complete dominance with the bat, but they didn't throw their wickets away either. Brian Bennett anchored and batted through, hitting 64 off 56. He was involved in three important partnerships with Tadiwanashe Marumani, Ryan Burl and Raza as they kept Australia at bay and posted 169/2.
Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans simply ran through the Aussies' line-up, snapping four and three wickets, respectively. Burl and Wellington Masakadza chipped in as well. But it was the seamers who scripted this famous victory.
Veteran Brendan Taylor has been ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury he picked up in the first game against Oman. Ben Curran has been named as his replacement.
Tall left-arm seamer Richard Ngarava missed the last game due to a niggle. If he is fit, then he will jump straightaway into the XI.
